I can't comment on the rest but I just got a Dell U2719dc which I'm very happy with it. It has a better panel than the S2719dc because it's Ultrasharp and is way more adjustable and has a VESA mount. Also I have no need for freesync. It's 'only' QHD but is very popular in the hackintosh community because it works well as a Mac monitor. Probably worth you reading this:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/afast5/dell_u2719dc_vs_s2719dc/

I decided against 4K because to get the features/colour accuracy/display quality I wanted was going to be too pricey. It looks great to me but I've never had a 4k monitor...

  • USB 3 Type C to Mini DisplayPort adapters. What's the difference between to £5 ones and the £50 ones? eg will this do the same thing as this or this ?

  • First one is in China, second one seems to be in the UK, so the price difference looks normal... Third one may or may not be in the US... that's also probably normal. They seem to be similar items.

  • I have an AirPort Extreme (plugged into the router) and an Airport Express (sat next to the AirPort Extreme. The Express shows "connection unknown" in the Airport Utility, and a dotted line between it and the Extreme. I've reset both and set them up again three times now, and this is driving me nuts. Why can't the Express connect to the Extreme? The Extreme is setup as a wireless network, the Express to extend that network.

  • Sounds like you could get a fair bit of WiFi interference with 3 units next to each other?

Perhaps try to space them out? Or use network cables?

  • Router (a Fritz box) has the WiFi turned off, connected via Ethernet cable to the AirPort Extreme. I configured the Extreme first as a base station, then the Express as an extension of the network created by the base station.

But, when the extreme/express are both operational I lose internet access - turn the express off and the internet comes back.

  • Possible on the same channel see if you can login to one and change it.

  • But, when the extreme/express are both operational I lose internet access - turn the express off and the internet comes back.

I had the same thing at ours when I hooked my time capsule up the first time. No idea why it happened, and it seems to have solved itself now

  • Purely anecdotal (and using the older n Extreme and two AEs), but I never ever got this to work satisfactorily as a base station and two extenders connected over Ethernet: One AE extended the network but with iffy connectivity, the other never worked at all (dotted line sounds familiar).

I think this is another bit of Apple “well, we tried” tech and my Cyberdog browser connected over ISDN through my GeoPort adapter agrees.

  • I love Cyberdog.

Wasn't aware they offer a browser!

  • Cyberdog was Apple’s mid-90s attempt at a web browser (and newsreader, ftp &c &c) for that new-fangled Internet thing. I think the name may have been a play on ‘fetch’, not a nod to glowsticks and trance : )

  • Cyberdog was Apple’s mid-90s attempt at a web browser

    I know : )

  • Excellent, we should form a CyberDog didn’t-users group!

  • Thanks, have ordered a cheap ebay one from the UK.

I fiddled with it again, Fritzbox router in the cupboard in the utility room at the end of the hall, with an Express plugged into it via Ethernet cable, then the Extreme in the sitting room (where the red icon is), connected over power line ethernet to the router, both Express and Extreme supporting a single wireless network.

Running a speed test in the living room (Extreme) I get a stable 16Mbps, running the same test in the utility room (Express) I get a stable 4Mbps. Fuck knows.

  • Hah, I just redid the speed tests and I'm getting 16.3 down 0.7 up from both AP's. Seems it's fixed itself. Woo!

  • how to unlock this file so that I can bin it? I can't even click the padlock to get admin rights

Alas no. Just the pencil at the moment. Waiting for the new Magic Keyboard to be released.

Yes, my MBP is a refurb - impossible to tell the difference between it and a new one, and it was the only way of being able to buy a machine with 16 Gig of RAM without waiting.
