Action Group Meeting - cycling deaths caused by lorries

  • OK so the first meeting should be small, just the very relevantly-skilled amongst us, like howsyourdad? or whoever has expertise in this field. Right?

    ok, recap
I am going to do an agenda, and points and proposed actions/items and post it before hand. We will have structure. We need to be efficient. I can chair if need be but I cant organise biscuits and all that. we need a good venue that will facilitate discussion and not be a distraction or hinderance. surely someone has a posh office who can throw in tea and biscusits and that we can link a laptop to a screen and minute everything realtime for everyone to see? Does the warehouse have those facilities?

Amy from Roadpeace will set the scene tell us the state of play at the moment. She is on all sorts of groups with the police, tfl etc etc and knows the craic.
Lets not get into issues, like separate lanes or not.
Lets get everyone there now at the first meeting who wants to come and wants to do sthg, even if they dont know what they want to do yet. There are so many things to be done, some need special skills, some dont. I want to be lean, effective and efficient. We dont want to repeat work or reinvent the wheel. First thing is to find out what is being done by whom. We can break out into working groups. Eg 4 people looking at whether we should be promoting lane separation. Looking at case studies - copenhagen, or more relevantly a street I came upon a couple of weeks ago - Howland street - separated with a kerb. Why the case study may or may not be applied.

Every issue I see us deciding on what needs to be done, collecting best practice, and then spreading that. Raising the bar in all issues at all levels.
Eg Cemex and their vehicles, Lambeth council and their lorry policy, etc etc.

I dont want to exclude anyone right now. We can whittle down later and break out into specialisms. We need people with skills in media, campaigning, law, highways, behaviour, maps (have you seen that google map of all the cycling deaths in the capital? Its v powerful but out of date now - job for ftony...?! ) statistics, analysis, policy, construction industry and people that are good at collecting and organising information, and admin, sending emails, webstuff etc etc.

We have a massive massive resource and a will to act. Actually I find it very exciting, this opportunity to change. But we have to be clever and make it work.

I have to get off line now and look after my kiddywinks but I will try and do the agenda and everything else tonight when they are in bed and post it - if I can do an attachment. This is following discussion with lots of people over the past months. But remember we need to stay focused on the big picture and then break it down in a mangeable fashion, we cant all discuss everything at once.
Apologies - this posting seems a bit lengthy....

  • I somewhat doubt that would make any difference as cyclists sometime unbeknowning to them of the danger, still undertake HGV/or have no idea about the amount of blind spot that HGV have.

OK cool, butif the locations in question are known accident 'blackspots' and lack of political will means that nothing is being done, surely that would help?

  • i'm simply putting my mark here so i can read it fully when i get home. Reading a thread like this requires more than a cheap nokia. But i'm down for meeting.

  • Hippy/DK spot on
The outcome of this meeting is to agree what actions we will take in the immediate future: 2 to 6 weeks
These actions should be achievable by the people on here and not require specialist skills/connections

It needs to be focused on HGV dangerous only, We need details of previous campaigns and current road statistics (I can get the latter)
We need to understand what related campaigns are active and pending by other bodies – repetition has massive value at times.

A second discussion should take on the longer term issues and take on board campaigns running with Roadpeace. LCC, moving target etc.. but not here. Let’s not mix the two else we will achieve nothing.

Greasy - I have sent you a PM. I have some Dept of Transport stats on the number of pedal cyclists killed, and seriously injured, in London, and the other types of vehicles involved in these accidents from 1994 - 2007. If you email me on address I have PM'd you I can send them to you. Or anyone else for that matter who PMs me.

  • Cheers Fox, dunno what happened, shitty IE must have cached an old version of page. Post deleted, Fox-list is right-list.

  • @ Ktee, I think it's exciting too. I think you're approaching it in the right way.

  • just an idea;
maybe we can join the skyride on sunday with white clothes and similar things on. Boris will be there and some celebrities and media..
    (repost sorry)

  • I'm currently in Paris, a sign has gone up showing a very simple road with a stick man lying down in the road with a red splash coming out of his head (not as graphic as it sounds) with the warning that five cyclists were killed in Paris in the whole of 2008. Which for a year, isn't that bad. Velib started in 2008 too.

    Linky added: http://www.prefecture-police-paris.interieur.gouv.fr/documentation/article/2009/panneau_secu_route.htm#

    third in from the right.

  • I posted a similar thing but then took it off because Velocio is right - we shouldn't rush to do anything, we need to do stuff that works.

hi, its you, glad you are on this forum. that map is excellent. (although eilidh features twice on the left....?) she always did merit and extra mention... ;)

    thank you for this offer.
people have asked me about setting up a charity and I think perhaps this is the default action in this situation, but not necessarily the right one.
I didnt want to do it cos I think there are enough organisations already covering this. maybe the problem is they are not focused enough on this one particular (HGV vs Cyclist) issue. anyway, i dont know the benefit of a charity apart from fund raising. the public should not be funding this, we need to prove a case for the govt, for councils, for construction companies, the dvla, to fund this stuff. other people are raising awareness etc etc. we just need to help all these other people do this stuff better, and make them do the stuff that needs doing that they are not doing.

  • Hi. I don't have any special skills/contacts but want to help in any way I can. (Sorry, I don't know how to add my name to the list)

    That's a fucking brilliant idea!
I've just registered. Black arm bands would be a somber reminder for this. I know it's meant to encourage cycling but screw that. It will be a great forum to highlight the dangers.

I've gone from teary eyed earlier today to friggin' ropeable now.

  • 35.......:)

  • Hi all, I've only just seen this--been off-line for most of the day.

I'm utterly shocked that there's been yet another fatality today.

I can make a meeting this coming Tuesday, and it's good to harness energy when it's fresh.

The key thing to do is to make a strong call on the Mayor and the Government to take effective action. Such action is necessarily complex--e.g., HGV/LGV-specific interventions that campaigners have called for alone number about 20, I think--but a campaigning message needs to be simple and clear. This is not too big an ask given that cycling in London has generally got safer, but the particular death toll from left-turning HGVs/LGVs hasn't been affected as strongly. (In fact, the collision rate has been reduced given the vastly higher number of cyclists, but people are still dying.)

The skill mix in the list is wonderful, especially the skills for reaching lots of people.

Again, the key thing in this campaign is strength in numbers and a clear and simple message. Look forward to it!

  • Apologies, I won't be able to make this meeting. To be really effective, I think you should be looking at what everyone else (ie LCC HGV group, CTC, Roadpeace, All-party Parliamentary Cycling group etc) is doing and try to complement their activities. There are a lot of very experienced campaigners who have achieved progress (blind-spot mirrors etc) but it has been painfully slow. I was involved in some of it, and the pace was excruciating.
