  • Ah James, never fails to live up to his username!

Glad to see you're okay and the new bike, but hurling abuse like that was a little uncalled for, but I can see you realised you shouldn't have.

    Tsk tsk though!

  • this sounds unfortunate and totally her fault but all you have to do it shout "oi oi, (coming through good people)" to grab her attention and then you can carry on cycling safely.

What I tend to do is whistle the tune of ring of fire or bad moon rising out of tune and people tend to avoid me on the street.....

  • Bollocks. There were more possible outcomes to the situation than that. Doesn't sound to me like she got a great deal of choice.

Pray tell me what other possible outcomes there were other than avoiding the idiot, or crashing into them?

I had a choice of the road, her, or pedestrians, I picked what I thought was the least nastiest out of the three.

James didnt get a great deal of choice about having to stop either! She was at fault, she got ranted at, she will probably look both ways from now on!

Indeed, if I had crashed into her it could have been a lot worse for her, I feel bad about swearing so much at her, but I was hurting and she was away with the fairies oblivious that I just fucked myself up to save her getting wrecked from her own stupidity, I feel my rant was justified...just would have been better without all the swearing.

If James had been driving a car or riding a scooter/motorbike and gone into the back of her it would have technically been his fault. She might also go away thinking that cyclists are aggressive nutters and she's better off sticking to driving in London, who can say? It's the fact that she asked him if he was ok and he just told her to fuck off several times (his words, see OP) that doesn't cut it for me. He was simply venting his anger and shock at her.

Erm yeah.......except in THIS SITUATION, I would have gone into the front of her...NOT THE BACK, try reading the whole thing properly before passing judgement, she was riding the wrong way up a one way street, if I was driving a car or a motorbike, I still would have been in the right, except she probably would be in hospital right now.
No matter what I was riding, Car/Motorbike/bicycle I would have been well within the law, and she would have been breaking it. If you're going to try and make a point at least get your facts straight first, otherwise you just look a little silly :)

  • I'm also suffering from an inexperienced cyclist.

I've just been on a charity ride through Holland (awsome cycling country. If you've never been there,go. It's perfect for fixed/ss long distance stuff). Anyway, riding two abreast on the last morning with another participant, she suddenly decides to go single file but rather than falling in behind me she tries to go in front. Before I knew what was happening I hit her wheel at about 16 mph and go flying.

This was Tuesday and I'm still bruised and in pain all down the left side of my back. Been to the docs today. No cracks or breaks but I'll be off the bike for a couple of weeks at least.

What struck me after is that the ride organisers gave no instructions about safe riding including basics like dropping back to go single file rather than going forward.

Other possible outcomes include, avoiding her 'just' and not telling her to fuck off repeatedly (while she was asking you if you were OK) after telling her why she was a complete ming-mong.

As for the direction she/you were traveling in my mistake. However, that doesn't change the fact that you weren't prepared for the unexpected and didn't have the time or space to stop safely. Although obviously there's no way of knowing, it honestly sounds as though you were probably going a bit too fast.

Although obviously I'm glad neither you nor her were hurt :)

  • CJ, I didn't know you were 16stone. You're sexy.

    Hahaha, feel the love! ;)

  • James, you really should have been prepared. What if a plague of frogs had suddenly appeared? Or a Harrier jump jet landed on you? You really haven't though this one through. Anything could have happened. Did you think about the possibility of penguins on the road? Jesus...

None of those things are really likely to happen though are they? I just think it's ironic that one cyclist takes out another by going the wrong way down a one way street. Going the wrong way down a one way street (if it's clear) is something that many cyclists do habitually (like RLJ). And to bowl into a one way street (as a cyclist) expecting it to be clear isn't really being prepared, no.

If you can't stop in the distance that you can see in front of you then you're probably going too fast.

  • I don't think James 'bowled into' a one way street, did he? I read is as though he turned into that street (the right way) and the other person was coming down it, the wrong way.

Agreed that most people do this and also RLJ (guilty), but I know it's my fault if I get hit doing so.

  • Joel, I'm going to disagree with you.

I feel that CJ did the right thing in venting his spleen at the silly woman.

It will have shocked her, and maybe saved her a fatal accident in the future. What if CJ were not on a bike, but was a lorry driver? The woman would not be a lucky as to get a simple balling-out.

When I was a courier, a lady was crossing with a group of people on Euston Road. The light was green for me, and the red man was showing for them, but there was no traffic, so they crossed. I aimed to cycle behind them, as though they should not have been crossing, they weren't really slowing me down. The lady at the back of the group saw me at the last second, and jumped BACKWARDS into my path! My bike hit her with full force and she was sent sailing onto the tarmac. She cracked her skull open, and blood flowed freely down Euston Road. I got off my bike screaming obscenities at her. I was in shock.

The police wanted to arrest me, but witnesses told them exactly what happened. If the woman had been conscious to hear my tirade, she would would be more mindful in the future when crossing a main road. CJ's lady was much luckier, and will have learnt the same ultimate lesson.

Being nice would make the lady possibly not see how serious the situation could have been. Mind you, she was probably checking out CJ's 16stone, and wanting him to ask her out or something. ;) Go CJ!

    Thats a worrying comment.

  • He'd be even sexier if he could manage to move back up to 17stone. Don't you think?

    ;)

Ha! My point in a way, although slightly different. I've actually just PM'd James to tell him I'm not trying to be cunt and basically explaining that when I was despatching (motorbike, about 500 years ago) a very similar thing happened to me (and now you). I really sounded off at the woman after telling her why she was a stupid cow for not looking where she was going or what she was doing and it's this that I take issue with in James' story. I blew up at her out of shock/surprise as you did as James did but I still think that if I'd have been able to control my temper she would have taken more away from the incident and probably would have learned more as a result. And that, I'm sticking with :-)

Born in Redhill, Surrey. UK citizen since birth. Grew up in Grenada. And in Grenada, no way does "anything go". Very conservative society. That is free. No charge.
