  • I added one to my Collings in the same location...

    Perspiration levels were high.

  • Check the Strymon Volante, it sounds amazing. Their El Capistan pedal is also great, like a simpler version. But the Boss Space Echo pedal is really good as a direct digital recreation.

  • Yeah a 201, battered but in perfect working order. Made a bit of profit but immediately regretting it! I had the pedal version before and didn’t get on with it, can’t remember why...

  • 400 boys is pretty punchy! Not an awful lot less than I paid for the Roland. Will have to check some video reviews out I think.

  • Yeah they’re toppy! They are very high quality though.

    I guess it depends what you want to achieve, the Boss one imitates the way the OG Space Echo works, there are other “tape delay“ pedal options out there but they won’t all be designed the same way, with that interface. The Catalinbread Belle Epoch is popular.

  • I got a princeton reverb kit. I've been thinking of building a champ clone for a long time, but finally ended up going with this.

  • Nice! Where'd you go for it? I've built a 1 watter before now but a princeton reverb would be a lovely thing to have.

  • I got it from Uraltone here in Finland. This will be my first amp build, but should be pretty straightforward. Layout style is traditional, but they use some traces on the PCB which I think will simplify the build compared to a plain eyelet board, and the kit even comes with wires pre-cut to correct lengths.

    I've ordered the cabinet from a Belgian guy on ebay. Total cost will be around the same as the Fender PCB reissues, so I'm not sure this makes a lot of sense financially.

  • New neck and pick guard for the mustang build. I wanted to check if I needed to plug any holes before I stain and finish the body. Turns out yes... plug all the holes! The old pick guard used to be misaligned and used to dig into the old neck.

    Talking of pickguards, I've got a nice sounding sunburst effect acoustic that I've always hated the look of. Stumbled on a forum about removing pickguards, ended up taking off the pickguard (and removing the residue) and it looks sooooo much better.

    It was a reddish tortoiseshell pickguard. Totally changed the appearance.

    To make it a bit more bizarre, this pick was in the thick glue under the pickguard....

  • I know a few people follow my Instagram, but since I started putting this one on here (all those years ago...) I figured I'd show the end product 😁

    I finished my Les Paul!

    I started this in July 2018, which surprises me a little - I didn't realise it had been so long.

    No idea how she sounds yet as she'll be off to Chandler's for a set up and fret dress in the next couple of weeks, but I'm super happy with how it looks.
    I've never really been a LP lover, but I can say, from having tested this in front of the mirror, that I've started to be a convert to how they look...

    Also really happy with the end weight - 7.7 lbs. It took a fair bit of chambering to get it down to that, as well as starting with very light mahogany.
    There's another one of these lined up for a mate of mine in the near future where we'll be going the opposite way - a full solid body which might tip the scales nearer to something CBS-like!

    It's called a volute (on the bottom of the headstock). Gibson's are prone to breaking there because they make their necks and headstocks out of a single piece of wood (eaiser to machine, so cheaper). You can see the weak spot in the attachment.

    The bit where the headstock meets the neck is thin, and further thinned out by the truss rod access hole. It also ends up with the grain going to wrong way across it, so it snaps really easily. The volute just adds 'thickness' to it to beef it up a bit.

    The solution is a skarf joint (which mine has, I just liked the look of the volute so added one) - I could geek out about this at some length :)

    I'm not sure that's true, I've seen some pretty premium guitars with one-piece neck/headstocks. It's certainly a difference between my cheap and expensive tanglewood acoustics (the expensive one has an even fancier volute than that). Cutting a neck and headstock from a single piece requires a bigger bit of wood with nice grain and no faults, which is potentially more expensive to source.

  • Yeah - that's true - you'll get more waste with a one piece neck which might become more relevant for a very expensive piece of wood.
    I'm actually not sure where (for someone like Gibson) the balance of cheaper machining of a one piece becomes more important than the increased waste of it. A two piece has a lot more steps (including clamping / glueing), whereas I imagine Gibson can make their current neck in minutes in a single pass through a CNC.

    Expensive guitars, maybe you'd like to use a one piece because your neck has nice wood and you don't want (or have to hide) glue lines / grain changes.

    It might not even be a cost decision for Gibson any more - I doubt they'd ever be able to change from a one piece neck anyway because it would cause a tsunami of offence to all their players :D

    It's an interesting design consideration. Short-grain pieces of wood in high-stress locations are bad, but minimising the number of glued-joints is probably a good thing too in terms of durability. There's a tradeoff somewhere there.

    That les paul looks lovely. Nice work.
