  • I have a habit of losing bar end plugs. Is there any tight fitting alternative to the free ones you get with bar tape? I know you can get plugs for mtb bars which clamp to the inside of the bar when you tighten a exterior allen key, is there anything like this for road bars?

  • Put your bar tape on propery and they will stay in.

  • champagne corks work a treat
and add that extra bit of class to your bike

  • actually it seems the hope plugs should fit road bars - at £15 though I might just wrap them in electrical tape to thicken them out a little.

well the crisis of the falling bar plug is finally sorted then.

  • There are cheaper expander plugs around.

    Why not just;

Leave a good bit of tape at the end of the bar before wrapping the tape and then fold it in for the plug!!!

  • i love the debate between Mr Beef and Mrs Butcher, some strange kind of nominative resonance

  • Haha, didn't notice that, I was too busy wondering why putting the tape on correctly was not an option.

    I hope I don't get the chop.......

    (I'll get my coat)

  • Leave a good bit of tape at the end of the bar before wrapping the tape and then fold it in for the plug!!!

I do this, maybe it's just because the bartape I'm using is quite thin. The plugs aren't falling out when I'm riding along, mostly when I put the bike down then I don't realise they've fallen out till later.

  • Expanders. Easy peasy. I got shiny chromesque ones.

Warning: this means you have wrapped your bars downwards instead of upwards, and will incur 'fail' comments should you choose to photograph it and post on this forum's most rivetting thread (according to Mr Wigan), Current Projects.

How about thicker bar tape? Fizik is nice, if you can lay your hands on any.

  • Fizik!

PM Shinscar.... he has loads of Fizik stuff, he's one of the main UK importers.

  • expander plugs came with my cheapo ritchey tape,

but there was no need to 'expand' them because i left a bit of tape overhanging and then gave the bar ends a little encouragement with a hammer. They are Snug.

@ skully: you wrap bar from the ends to the centre... no ?

  • I wrap blu tack around the plugs, holds it in perfect

    what are you talking about?

    and: user error

  • he's talking about wraping your bars the wrong way.

    obviously.

  • Expanders. Easy peasy. I got shiny chromesque ones.

where? i need some to fit in the drops and stay flush with the bartape.

  • BLB sold me some a year ago. They was no-name basic stuff.

Yeah, cheers spags, back me up homie.

Wrap tape from inside (i.e. stem side) to outside, bottom to top. Any other way is the work of Bielzebub.

  • if you wrap it that way on bullhorns, you encounter difficulties, as you are gripping it 'against the grain' so to speak, and it will have a tendency to come loose

  • I think DV8 do plugs that fit nice and tight.
