ACS claws horror

  • I've been running my Fuji fixed for the past year or so, and needed an 18t cog, so after checking a certain auction site, I picked up a ACS claws freewheel to try out the ratio (it cost a fiver and was 'new').

My god - it is terrible. I know you guys always say stick to fixed, but that is a massive understatement. The bike feels TERRIBLE. And it sounds like a tractor.

    Never again. NEVER.

  • Well, I've got an 18T Shimano (liberally doused with Phil's Tenacious Oil) - whisper quiet and feels great. Cheers.

  • ACS freewheels are pretty good. The loudness of ratchet pawls is a sign of quality, modern bmx cassettes are waaay louder. I think your just having the freak reaction to freewheeling, just keep pedalling and its almost the same.

  • White industries ENO freewheel; the canine gonads.

  • Semi derail - speaking of freewheels - has anyone got a shimano 18T to swap for a 17T or 16T (now that your legs are stronger and stuff)...?
    PM please.

  • White industries ENO freewheel; the canine gonads.

They should be diamond tipped canine gonads at £70!

  • ACS have always been a loud freewheel, they sound like a machine gun and that's not a bad thing.

If you want the stealth ride to appear like you're fixed then go for a Shimano Stealth and pack it full of butter

Have just ordered a 15T one, always used Shimano before. So looking forward to the new gunship noise :)

  • i finished putting together the girlfriend's beater pub/park bike at the weekend and took it for a test ride. after a tentative trip round the block to get used to freewheeling after a couple of years only riding fixed i set out for the shops. got a big cheesy grin freewheeling down cross street and weaving though the traffic along essex road. started humming raindrops keep falling on my head for some reason. great fun.

  • just wear them in they'll quieten down a bit mine now purrs like a small kitten rather than a rattle snake

  • I think Im right in saying HOPE have the loudest freehubs - I love that Ting Ting Ting sound

  • Yeah their sound is amazing

Expensive but worth it. I've not managed to break one yet and I am a 94kg curry muncher with a liking for biggish gears.

I have found that it is ultimatly cheaper to buy he most expensive you can afford. If you like it you have an item that will last, if you don't then it will fetch a good price 2nd hand.

  • Actually was tempted to get one, which is why I knew the price. But with all the other unnecessary expensive parts on the bike I couldn't justify it.

I do agree with buying more premium products in general, as you say you get better value for money in the long run.

    As for heavy weights. I'm 103kg and haven't broken a Shimano freewheel....yet!

  • I have broken 2 Shimano and 1 ACS freewheel.
I had an ENO unit fail but that was down to incorect assembly, someone left out the circlip. Other then that I have had 3 on different bikes for 2 years without a breakage.

  • I have broken 2 Shimano and 1 ACS freewheel.

Note to self. Must pedal faster/harder ;)

  • ACS claw is best freewheel below £50, Ive ridden NOS suntour freewheel ACS claw and White industries ENO, suntour and eno were louderst, ACS claw sounds gread with the greas removed though. nothing like a good freewheel, makes a good change from sneaking up on people on fixie. I soaked my ACS Claw in WD40, sounds like a fishing line through a loud speaker, sneak up on people pedaling and there shocked when they hear RRHHHHHHGGGGGGGGHGHHHHRRRRR!!!!! right next to them.

  • and pack it full of butter
