Which Tyres?

  • Good deal on GP5000 for those that still ride sub 28c tyres in 2021.

  • looks like the market has bottomed out ever since JB declared the carcass on GP5000 was about as supple as marathon plus!

  • We need @JB to do the same trick for Challenge tyres then

  • GP5000 still the go to for a "fast" tubeless 700x32 (or 33)? I've been really happy with the Challenge SB in 36 but now on a wide rim they measure out to 40mm and I'm ready to try something different - and the SB only has a 30c, as does the Corsa Control. Typical ride is 90-95% paved, rest light gravel or dry hardpack depending on season.

    Other 32s:
    Pirelli Cinturato or P7 Sport
    Michelin Power Road
    Hutchinson Sector
    Schwalbe Pro One

Michelin or Schwalbe seem like the next best option (or maybe just best if the Contis are as difficult to mount as I've heard).

Edit: have just discovered a secret menu for Challenge that does in fact have a 700x33 option so that's in the mix.

  • I've been super impressed by my 32c Michelin Power Road Tubeless. 4,000 miles in, no punctures, plenty of life left and surprisingly quick. They come up at 35 on my 25mm internal rims. They started to leak a bit of sealant after 3000 miles but a top up stopped that and they've been fine since.

I've been less impressed with my Conti GP5000 (tubed) on my other bike, really fast wear rate.

Was about to say. Stick to those, easier to assume the same TL setup you have would be running just as good?

  • Cheers @Saffronspokes & @giofox, I was heading toward the Michelin so it'll between that and the SB. Slick vs file tread. May come down to cost depending how I feel at the time, I've been letting this build get away from me lately!

  • Bad luck that right outside the house is cycle over some sharp flint that would leave a 1cm gash off centre on bothy Pirelli Cinturato that the sealant had no hope of sealing.

What's to replace? Can't afford a new set.of tubeless as that'll set me back £100 at least. What's a good tubed pair similar to Pirelli at non-tubeless prices?

  • What size?
Edit: if road bike size 25-32mm, I'm currently running a pair of Specialized Turbo Pros, seem nice enough, bit more supple than cinturatos, with some p protection on the tread, they go up to 30mm.

  • Can you patch the tyres and use tubes with them or no?

  • A strip of gorilla tape inside and some flexible glue to cover the hole

  • This is weird.

  • This is a Maxxis Velocita EXO.

The tyre is a rear, less than 1500km (mostly road) use.

The blister seems to swell as the tyre is inflated.

  • Had a Schwalbe Pro One do that as well. Time for the bin.

  • What’s likely to happen if I keep riding it?

  • I’ve asked Maxxis the same. They owe me a tyre really.

  • Mine was hitting the fork crown so had to go immediately. Id guess those spots are thinner and therefore reacting to pressure differently. I’d imagine you’d be wearing sealant quite quickly continuing to ride them

Yeah, seems like it’s a layer that’s delaminated. Not sure if there’s sealant right behind them.

  • Had this on a strada bianca, it's full of sealant. Was under 12mo and the retailer replaced it.

    Check this mighty hump

  • Yes, I'm going to get some worms and see if that'll do the job. Just got frustrated and annoyed and was hasty in wanting to bin them.
Still, am considering something a little narrower (28mm) for a bit more speed as the Cinturato feel sluggish to me.

  • Old WTB Horizons. Not had it with new tyres though, that would be annoying.

  • Maxxis say it’s a warranty job (and no other infos).

  • Yeah, if they're new I'd want a refund for sure. Mine were very well used.
