when people dont moan about the threads, and join in the fun, be happy cheerful, and smile. Rather than being elitist (sp?) people. :)

I have been toying with the idea of buying a decent geared road bike for some weeks now, spending the thick end of £2k. My head was been full of questions, alu or carbon? SRAM, Shimano or Campag? Will the carbon version be smoother than the alu one?
Today, I went out on my self built Pompino in the sunshine, fair enough, it's probably not as stiff as a more hi tech frame but is certainly more comfortable and is a joy to ride and as such, I figured why spend all that dosh on going a bit quicker?
My bike is a one off, lightweight and comfy, the money is staying in the bank! -

I thought that until I spent an obscene amount of money on a shiny bike I barely ride. Redefined 'joy to ride' for me, admittedly not proportional to the amount invested, but whatever.

But you'll need to keep the pompino around so that you can fully appreciate the difference (lighter/stiffer/attracts people) every time you take the crabon fiber bike out.

I went for the middle ground and bought someone else's price of a small hatchback, carbon fibre, campagnolo record, aero wheeled extravagence for a sensible second hand price. I rode it for the first time this year just the other day and still don't regret a single penny of the outlay. The ride is head and shoulders above that of my cheaper bikes.

Good on you lad.I rate using what you have rather than fixating on new stuff all the time and content myself with only one bike build a year.

My second most enjoyable bike to ride is a been-to-hell-and-back Giant Bowery. Cost as much as the pedals on the nice bike. As long as you're smiling, you're winning.
