If one judges middle classness by the criteria that are used to measure the growth of the middle classes in the developing world, the very fact that we are using computers recreationally makes us all middle classed.

Central Londons roads are currently absolutely fucking fucked. I've just got home from Euston and it was gridlocked everywhere until I got back souf of the river.
And that was travelling before 5pm :( -

totally ridiculous! her logic was incredulous. people undertaking me drives me crazy anyway.
It's one of the problems when you position yourself correctly in the primary position that less experienced riders will do that, and it does impose the burden on you to look over your shoulder as you slow down or change your line. Not absolutely always, but on the occasions when you know or reasonably expect that there are such riders behind you.

Bumped into the LCC taking a group of nodders round the E & C roundabout too, lots of red puffing faces. Still, hope more of them do it regularly.
The BikeTubes were a good success--we'll be running this on non-strike days, too.
NB the LCC takes no political position on the strike. We simply want to help people to travel in and widen their repertoire of transport options (or, if we manage to turn them into total bike nuts, to narrow it ;) ).

they sometimes do that (london cycling campaign?) at the north side of southwark bridge of an evening. very cool
I think what you mean is probably organised by the Corporation of London, although we sometimes take part in some way.

Can you at least see all the effort put in today: more river services, more buses, walking maps, LCC organising rides, bike parking space etc...
But people are so lazy that they prefer to jump in their cars when most of them probably could walk to work in one hour.
Actually, it's likely to be laziness in only a few cases. Mostly it's probably a lack of imagination, a fear of the 'unknown', or a craving for the wrong kind of 'comfort' (sedentary and passive as opposed to active, independent and self-determined luxury travel by pedal cycle) that is a decisive factor. Many people who use cars are simply victims of motor dependence. They could be so much better off but are not quite at the point where they can break free.

In other news, I'm off to see Faith No More tonight in Brixton. Having to abandon the bike in favour of public trainspot. Probably will get to see the encore.

its this sort of imagery that will really encourage people to cycle, its free, its easy, its fun
Actually, not 'free'--don't propagate the image of cycling as a low-status activity through 'cheapness'--it raises the wrong expectations in people. But it's certainly excellent value for money!

Fantastic, more ticket touts getting in the way of ordinary folk going about their drug-buying business.

I got into the centre quite early today for the Parliamentary Bike Ride at 8:15 and could see some effect of the Tube strike, but didn't think it was all that dramatic compared to previous editions, where I'd seen pedestrian traffic jams all around the place. However, Westminster was certainly very busy, and as the ride only set out around 9am, it was quite difficult to get it through to Parliament.

I just had the best damn ride from fulham up to acton in memory. so many new things to dodge, inexperienced pedestrians, royal mail people getting out in the middle of the road, scooters, cyclists, taxis, go-peds...
Every little backstreet, shortcut, filter, lane-switch seemed on a bloody kife-edge, and overtaking everything in sight. I'm fucking buzzzing hard! -

hang on.. Low status? explain?
The way people think is that they want to point to something that they've afforded as a status symbol, an asset, something that's worth something. 'Cheap' never cuts it--people who only have cheap things have a lower status. Hence, it's worth stressing that cycling is very much value for money, although of course it isn't 'cheap' (pejorative connotations, and 'cheap' is generally a relative concept, anyway, i.e. there is usually an implied comparison, e.g. with running a car in this case), and it obviously isn't 'free' as in money, although you do get a lot of freedom.
The traditional low-status image is of old, dirty, unkempt cyclists wearing flapping hi-viz vests over shirts or jumpers with holes in them, and other cheap accessories. In a nutshell, people who've been a 'failure' in life and can't afford a car. Naturally, that image is now well and truly defeated, but it's still important to make clear to people that it's worth investing in something decent (bike, parts, lock, etc.), and to be prepared to pay a little more. If people come in thinking that it's free, they typically try to avoid spending money and pay for it later, or stop cycling again quickly.
