Every pair of trainers produced emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as a 10 mile drive - and the industry is pumping out over a billion pairs a year.

There definatly needs to be a case for recycling trainers. I don't know if it's viable but the big company's could earn alot if brownie points if they could incorporate recycled rubber / leather.
I'm definatly trying to resist buying as much as I used to. Be interesting to see how much carbon dioxide is produced for alot of fashion items. -

Also what the fuck

Decent leather shoes also have a massive impact.
Edit: not snippy, just everything has an impact at scale.

Fair enough, but a good pair of leather shoes can last 20 plus years if looked after. Trainers?

Self tying laces FTW?

I've got loads of trainers that are that old
-
• #23087
Yeah. I've had trainers for 10 years.
-
• #23088
I reckon.
-
• #23089
Yeah but people don't usually have hundreds of pairs of leather shoes.

• #23090
That you wear a lot?
-
• #23091
Not for me esp if the rest of the shoe looks like that 🤢
-
• #23092
Out of necessity.
Most trainers for general wear last about 2 years and get worn up to 5.
Expensive leather shoes don't fit my "vibezstllyles".
Would guess leather shoes and the cows they grew on have Bigfoot prints.

Trainers are of course not as long lasting as leather shoes boots.
But leather shoes have an impact just as most things made do.
But yeah trainers have a bigger impact just due to the size of the market. -

This is my way of making everyone move back to barefoot.

Yeah but people don't usually have hundreds of pairs of leather shoes.
Instagram tells me different. There’s a German guy on IG who’s got a collection of over 300 pairs of vintage Red Wing boots in the space of 13 years. There’s some Japanese heads with hundreds of custom made shoes with exotic leathers and all.
I’d agree that there’s far more trainer collectors though but there’s a problem with everything.

Looks like it is more than a touch overinflated.
https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-what-is-the-carbon-footprint-of-streaming-video-on-netflix
analysis suggests that streaming a Netflix video in 2019 typically consumed 0.12-0.24kWh of electricity per hour, some 25- to 53-times less than estimated by the Shift Project, as shown in the chart, below left. The results are highly sensitive to the choice of viewing device, type of network connection and resolution
Any suggestions for understated, black, comfortable, non leather, ideally cheap trainers? Looking for something to wear at work, I'm on my feet a fair bit and my two current options of Vans or DMs aren't great after a long day.
