  • What, so the empty lock was attacked even without a bike locked in it?! What area of Bristol if you don't mind...a reminder never to lock anything up there!

  • Angle grindered? Also looks like it’s been hit with something.

  • why someone would put that amount of energy into breaking a lock

    Practice?
    They're popular locks

  • Yes, literally just a lock on the lampost. Looking at the impact marks can only imagine it must have been a sledgehammer? Was the very far east side, east of Hillfields.

  • Not a million miles from me. Sorry about the lock, at least the bike is still with you...I hope?!

  • Could it be council or similar attempting to 'clean up' what they thought were abandoned locks. Had a quick Google and saw others from quite a few years back reporting locks cut from bike racks in Bristol

  • Nah, this was miles away from any of that type of street clutter/litter. Only conclusion I came to was this was completely illogical.
Still have my bike, thanks to that broken lock and my 12 year old kryptonite evolution coupled with some stealthy locking location. And removing wheels.

  • I was a bit intriguiged by the Hiplok anti-angle grinder lock; then I found out it cost £250

    https://hiplok.com/product/hiplok-d1000/

  • I've heard it recommended that you ought to spend 10% of the value of your bike on a lock to protect it. £2,500 isn't even that much to spend on a bike these days, 105 Di2 GS gets you more than halfway there.

  • What can I do with a kryptonite mini D that I've lost the keys for? Its just sitting there, feels a shame to dump it.

  • I don't have the key number.

  • Contact Kryptonite? You might be able to send them the lock (at your own expense) and they might sort you out. Being able to send the lock in kind of proves it's not being used for anything else I would guess.

  • Yeah may as well. Nothing ventured etc.

  • They weren't super helpfully when I lost my keys, ended up buying another lock then found the master after Id bought another which didnt have the tag on it for some reason.

  • They do have a replacement service it seems, if you have the lock but have lost the keys, but only for US and Canada residents.

  • Woohoo

Weighs a ton though. Definitely only carrying it on the motorbike.

  • What's the real world weight? I keep stopping myself pre-ordering, but I'm seriously considering one.

  • I’ll weigh later but I wouldn’t want it hanging off a belt, even with your carry harness. Definitely carry on the bike and then id be thinking cargo where the weight wont show as much. Mine’s for moto use only and it is a perfect fit for where I wanted to use it (round the swing arm which carries the drive shaft and through the rear wheel).

  • Yeah I'd be keeping it in the cargo bag on my Omnom to replace the less secure, and smaller Hiplock D-lock I have. The bike is insured, but I'd still be fucked if it was stolen as I'd be unable to work for bloody ages.

  • Some size comparison pics, next to a Kryptonite New York I saw lying around in the car park.

  • Burly. Would be keen on that for the motorbike.

  • Oh, it's a big boy! Been looking for something ultra secure with a larger shackle for the cargo bikes at work. Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

  • I know the numbers don’t quite add up.
