  • Take a look at the AP Instagram feed and you'll be amazed at some of the variations they are churning out. Blasphemy to some...

  • He is saying the current OP and current AK are the same, save their different dials.

That is obviously an example of an old AK and current AK in @freddo s post.

  • Looking pretty good I'd say

  • Still loving my Tudor... anyone know who makes/made a nice 34mm chronograph?

  • They aren’t, though. Where the OP39 shares much with the Explorer, the Air King has the same relationship to the Milgauss.

  • Just started watching the 12 Monkeys tv series. Dat scratch, much dial.

  • Still loving my Tudor...

Exactly, this is a beautiful watch, I’d take this over a new Rolex all day long.

anyone know who makes/made a nice 34mm chronograph?

    I offer you £750 of tropical-dialled goodness:

  • What doesn't make sense to me is to say that "The Oyster Perpetual is (to my eye) the successor to the Air King which now... is the antithesis of the understated elegance which to me is what the Air King used to be about." because the current OP and current AK are near enough the same watch (albeit with dial variations), but more importantly, side by side with the 5700 the new OP looks unrefined and like it needs to lay off the doughnuts. Take a close look at the hands in this picture for example, the elegant aesthetic is totally lost in my opinion.

If you can show me the 5700 Air King you provide the photo of in the current range then I'll agree that it's as elegant as it ever was. However, and as Hugo7 points out, the current Air King is visually challenging.

You also pick the most horrifying of the OP's dials to make your point, which is fine - but risks overdoing it.

Lets put it another way, from the current Rolex range what is closest to the Air King that you provided the photograph of, that is not the Explorer?

  • Just helping sort out my recently deceased mother in law's jewellery.

So far we have found, 13 cheap montine watches, two 18k longines and a moody Rolex so moody that I can't even bring myself to photograph it.

  • Sorry about your loss @Stonehedge.

@Dammit: I already offered my answer to this question here
but if you want a Rolex 5700 then why not buy one? If you must have a new Rolex for some reason then perhaps try on a 34mm DJ on oyster and smooth bezel.

  • Interesting suggestion in the Globemaster. Not a watch I'd ever paid attention to given how awful the annual calendar version is, but the version you posted is very nice indeed. Especially the one you posted but on the strap.

  • That is lovely! You bought it for £750?

  • Brown on Brown

  • It’s nice but looks larger than 34mm...
I’ve found this for half the price... anyone know much about CIMIER?

I've gone back and re-read your post and can't find an answer in there, but whatevs.

Datejust has the cyclops, and it's too small.

Why new? Because I have some experience in buying older cars and they cost a fortune to keep correctly, I can't be buggered spending twice the cost of a new watch on one that will then potentially need the same again spending on it to make it work.

    Love it

If you follow the link there is no answer, however, which makes it somewhat less pithy as a response.

  • It's the photo of the Omega Globemaster @dammit - that is the answer.

  • The whole Rolex range has risen in price, I think? Pretty sure when I looked at a 36mm OP it was £3900. It's now £4100. The 39mm was £4100 and it's now £4350. Spenny. Makes vintage Rolex an even better value proposition... and Grand Seiko too....

  • It's the photo of the Omega Globemaster @dammit - that is the answer.

It's an answer, it's not the answer to "what in the Rolex range", which was my question.

  • Reminds me of

  • It's the only answer. Sorry - misunderstood. I mean, the 34mm OP is the only answer. I just think the coloured dials are so shit. The rodium and black/white dials are the only acceptable ones and in reality.

  • Following the Rolex conversation please find enclosed the following. Including previous generation Air king and a 34mm datejust and no adventurous colours anywhere . All very classic .
These are all “preowned” but owned by us as either loan or wear watches.
    All bargains!!

  • You can always rely on me to prompt a sales opportunity!!

  • I'm baffled by the OP hate.

It seems like one of the nicest new Rolex you can buy. A pretty timeless design that hits the steel sports watch spot.

Yes there is a whiff of Fisher Price, but surely that's better than the stench of shit from some of their offerings.
