  • None of the above stems are threaded.

Do you mean an ahead stem, like this?

  • i am idiot. i wrote stem but was thinking headset (dont write wanted ads when on the phone!!)

so..scratch that, i want a headset... campag or stronglight or something? need it for a l'eroica pre '87 project but cant imagine them caring too much at l'eroica about the date of my headset

BUT... while i am here, i am after a threaded stem with a track drop? is it 87º? 90-110mm? (yes also 1inch for a different bike)

  • i feel like such a tit now. doh.

  • yep. tit. What you riding to l'eroica? Are you doing the 200km? Im still on the hunt for this years bike, maybe someting late 60's or 70's.

For cheap but effective silver, have you looked at the steel tange headsets (try the 'bay)..the passage is cheaper but only matt silver, not chrome..not too dissimilar to some of the campy ones too. And the inspection at l'eroica is definitely only eficient in the italian sense of the word, so you'll get away with pretty much anything..

  • i've got this and I think is is pre 87

    Stronglight in good nic

    £10

Stronglight A9 is still available, looks about right on my '81 Moser. Some people have issues with this HS but I've never had any problems

What? You're still looking for a threaded stem?

SJS don't have stock at the moment. Chicken probably do.

i think i will be riding the dave russell, even though i have no idea what year it is, it will be built up with period parts and it's a classic steel frame anyway

if not i want to see if i can get a 1950's path racer, i did 160km last year i think? but this year will be looking at the 80km and having more fun, drinking more, etc

    :)

yeah, Ive considered doing the shorter distances for more drinking time too. Ive done the 200km a couple of times and it means getting up early, doing a long downhill in the cold and dark, then riding all day, and I definitely see the attraction of getting up late and drinking more wine.

Is that "path racer" as in fixed? Its less than ideal for the gravel roads and hills of tuscany, but the respect you get from everyone else (or looks of "crazy foreigner") makes it worth the pain..

Just read your account of last years broken stem, btw. Epic. Youve beaten my best L'eroica bodge by far:

Obscure sized wheelnut replaced by wire scavenged from an abandoned refrigerator. Lasted 120 very slow km though..

  • that's a pretty epic bodge though!!

you doing it this year? and yes i definitely want to do it fixed this time, think it's very doable, its hilly indeed but it's no yorkshire

    :)

  • yeah, im hoping to be back this year. I only missed last year because of the BFF.

Its definitely doable on fixed. I did the 200km on a 1950 Gillott with 50x21/50x17 double fixed, 23mm tubs and a fair amount of walkingup the really steep parts. And an equally fair amount of spinning like crazy on the way down again. After the first time I kicked my feet off the pedals for the descent, then discovered theres no way back into straps when the cranks are spinning at 200rpm, I decided that was a bad idea.

Yeah, its no yorkshire. Its not raining, for a start :)
