I hear those Bembo tripods are more versatile that the tilting Hoefer ones
(they were better when they were still made in Germany) -

if pushed I'd say Hoefler, the Cap R in bembo makes me shudder every time I see it

Someone else shares my frustration! Why, oh why is it so wide?

Try ITC New Baskerville - nicer caps IMO and the lowercase g is sweet

Fucks me, there's a whole new world out there.
I think I'm being clever selecting Arial for my dumb-arse reports. My next one is gonna be pimpin'.

The reason the capital letter R is so wide in the font Bembo has a lot to do with ancient Rome. Bembo is a type design that was based on the work of Aldus Manutius. (born c.1450)[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldus_Manutius[/ame]
He would most likely have been influenced by carved Roman capital letters. The best example of which are found in the inscriptions at the base of the Roman monument Trajan's Column (completed in 1113 AD)

Considered, but felt it was a bit too heavy for text. May end up using a Baskerville for titling, though.

Don't let Tynan hear you say that.

My issue is less so with the tail and more with the width. In the Trajan column the R is considerably less than 1 em width, whereas Bembo Standard's capital R is only a fraction narrower than 1 em. It's really jarring, rendering it virtually useless for titling.
Monotype's Bembo has a narrower capital R which does solve the problem, but feels slightly narrow compared to other capitals :(

bit of a sideways leap and I don't know what job you're using the font for but I'm digging 'Glypha' at the mo,
slightly less traditional, decent caps and slightly narrower face, comes in loads of weights as well

It's for my dissertation, so a slab is a little inappropriate. The heavier italic weights are rather nice though, I'd definitely consider that or Serifa for article titling.

currently renewing my love affair with didot. it's just that little bit more elegant than baskerville. and i've found a cut with a dozen different weights, which is lovely. it's all about the classics.
