Yeah that is true, I just get into the habit of popping off the saddle when coming to a bump to leg the legs take it.

running the 25 maxxis refuse at the moment, has held up very well and much easier to get on than the rubinos

i have 23c on the front, and 25 rear. been thinking about getting a 28 on the rear as i think it might smooth the ride but not comprimise speed. not really sure what tires though.
dont really want to ride my road bikes at the moment with ice everywhere.

I just downsized from 23c to 18. Mass + friction = waste of energy.

• #31
Yeah but on a commuter..
fast tyres + punctures = waste of time

My only commute is to the pub.
-
• #33
I thought your driver took you too n from the pub?

he does.
it's still a 'commute', technically.

How much smaller are 25s comapred to 28s, I need to clear about 8mm, will that be enough?
-

23's for me. Never had significant probs with punctures, but I keep em well inflated. Used 25's once cos they were all I cld get hold of quickly. Couldn't really tell the difference, so went back to 23 for that less is more look. Haven't tried anything smaller yet.

23s front and back, both are white Vittoria Zaffiro 2 and not had a single flat since being fitted in April. Keep the pressures up and they are fine, even in this weather, and only 26tpi!!!!!

"*but I do notice the extra 140 grams when picking up my bi*ke."
Feck me, what a nutter. I walked up some stairs yesterday and forgot to fart first. The extra few grams really affected my climbing ability.Anyway
I've got 20mm front and 22mm rear. Basically for out and out performance (this is'nt really my commute bike) Veloflex FTW.
If I start to commute on this bike in the spring I'd most likely go for 23mm front and 28mm rear. Something like 65% of your weight is on the rear.
I dont really understand why you would expect less punctures with wider tires, but the wheel rims would be better protected, and the ride more comfy.

Nor me. You would actually think the chances increased as the contact patch is wider therefore more chance of picking up something that will cause a puncture. Alongside the lower pressures used which again can't help.
The best thing about 28s for me was that the bike felt more stable (especially downhill on poor tarmac) and gave a generally safer feel to the bike. Couldn't stand them for uphills, increases of speed or the added heaviness to the handling so changed back to 23. Maybe 25 would be a good compromise so I may try that size next.

I'm using 23 front and back at the moment. I've got a Vittoria Zaffiro at the front because you can get them incredibly cheaply on ebay and I've found them to have good puncture resistance, at least as a front tyre. I've got a gatorskin at the back because everyone goes on about how good they are so I thought I'd give them a try. Seems alright so far, and it feels like it rolls easier than the 25 Schwalbe Marathon I had on there before. I think Marathons are quite heavy tyres though. That said, their puncture resistance is incredible. I think puncture resistance is my main priority in tyres now, I just got fed up with repairing punctures by the roadside, and you always seem to get a puncture at the most inconvenient time (as if there's ever a convenient time!).

NB. My wheels are the same front and back (32s, 3x, cxp33s), hence the large diference in tyre diameter considered.

32c for a nice smoot ride. My elbows dont hurt like they used to since i upped my tyre width.
23c dont half vibrate the fuckk outta ya.

I had gatorskins in 23c, and they were wicked in terms of a fairly decent amount of grip, and low rolling resistance, but ride quality was a bit poo, and not that good at soaking up the bumps from hopping off curbs etc etc.
