Why do you need the House of Lords at all?
It's all an illusion of real democracy. Being governed by the Royals and land owners is similar to being a citizen of Ukraine right now - nothing more than being part of a puppet show.

It's not just the House of Lords that is undemocratic.

What choice to we really have when electing the Parliament?
Blue, yellow or red capitalists, or a combination (green, purple, orange capitalism) and now new on the scene - The new racist capitalist party, UKIP to be given as much air time as the others . (What colour are they -Brown?)

Bob Crow and Tony Ben fought to protect workers from the ravages of capitalist ideologies of whatever colour . Unfortunately they failed and have left no succession, and we are largely helpless against big money both national and international.

A depressing week

It was supposed to work like Plato's philosopher kings. Give the power of oversight to people who are supposed to be beyond self interest because they already have everything.
Life peerages changed that and politicised the upper house. Blair decimating it whilst failing to replace it with a proper second chamber removed effective oversight and opened the way for presidential government and so much bad legislation. We all know how well that's been going since.
I liked Billy Bragg's idea. Have a directly elected upper house based on direct share of the vote, and give it some actual power.
