  • the nut!

  • Oh well. This is fading out into a draw. Bloody weather.

  • What the fuck is going on

  • Aus 17-3, (since Tea?)
Paine unable to resist, and doesn't play a Captain's innings.

  • Now raining in Ruislip,
so it'll be at Lords in no time.
I doubt we'll bowl all the remaining overs.

  • Roy's drop costly then

  • Still, when it rained this morning, looked like it'd be a waste of a day. Turned out another really good afternoon of Test crikkit. Taking Thurs off to watch Headingley.

  • Headingly will be key. Interesting to see if/how smith plays or if they continue with Labbywhatsit who looked capable replacement.

  • A session more and I reckon we'd have that. Off to Headingley on the Saturday, hoping we can take confidence from that

  • On a county cricket tip, I took the twins to the Oval today and wandered up to the Corinthians roof terrace. No one about so the boys could muck about and we managed two hours and twenty minutes.

also one poo and five wees. Twins are called Sam and Tom by the way. I couldn't get away with calling my daughter Ben.

  • England unchanged, despite all the tw@tter baying for Roy's blood. Anderson still being "assessed" - maybe not promising for Old Trafford either then?27418170/anderson-headingley-test-england-name-unchanged-12

  • While there don't appear to be many other options, I'd give Roy another go, but tell him to play a bit more one-day mode. Smashing 40 or so quickly is better than scratching around for 10. Might give Stokes a go at 3 and move Root back to 4. Stokes has shown he has the temperament to stick around before accelerating. It's not really working as is.

  • Stokes a go at 3 and move Root back to 4

Massively this (unless he has a heavy bowling workload). Also Buttler below YJB.

  • Stokes' best position is at #5 and for the sake of the team he should stay there. I don't think it's particularly fair on Denly either if they move him to open and have Roy down at #4, even if him and Burns seem to compliment each other quite well.

  • It feels unnecessarily quirky, but I would really be tempted to try Woakes at 3. His technique is really good, if we ask him to perform a Trott type role and see off the new ball and hold it together he could be an interesting experiment and would allow other players to play in their best positions. I mean, it's certainly no worse an idea than playing Mo as opener/3...

  • I’d like to have Sibley opening and Roy at 4.

That said, I don’t think messing about too much is good for morale and it’s a short turnaround to tell a batsman he’s playing on Thursday when there are county championship games finishing on Tues/Wed.

  • Smith ruled out of the 3rd test. A real shame, but for England they will probably be happy, as twisted as that may sound.

  • Right call, if there were any doubt at all about him. As you say, a proper shame not to see the best of ours take on the best of theirs. But Jimmy's out too, so honours even on that front (probably).

  • as twisted as that may sound.

Just like many were happy when McGrath stepped on a ball.

I'm happy about it (though wish Smith a full recovery and that he's fit to play again...after 17th September)

  • Does Archer start with a 2 in the wickets column?

  • Hahaha!

And according to Andrew Samson, TMS scorer and statto, ICC registered Smith a duck in the second innings by his being substituted. Bit harsh.

  • Does that mean Tufnell has to prance naked round St John’s Wood?

  • On TMS on sunday, Samson said that Tuffers wouldn't have to because Smith was not on the second innings scorecard at all having been substituted.

  • Whoever mentioned twickets on here a few weeks ago, I thanked you then but need to say thanks again because I've managed to snag some Headingly tickets

  • Damn. I must have missed that bit.
