Ive just come over to vancouver to study for 4 months, but couldnt bring my bike which is a bit annoying.

i want to get one out here, but dont want to spend too much on. Has anyone been in the same sort of situation to know where i could pick up some second hand bike, a thrift store maybe? had a look on craigslist but its pretty sparce.

    Any help would be great.

    cheers

  • If you cant afford anything at Super Champion (exchange rate will spank you) then they'll set you in the right direction. Very nice guys.

And enjoy the trip there through Hastings!

  • Hastings & Main, ftw!

  • hastings & main is THE place to get heroin, gangrene, and a beautiful fixie all in an afternoon.

  • I worked as a messenger in Vancouver in '95/96 and at that time there was a sports goods exchange place in Kitsilano bought a Gios cheap also picked up a track frame at a shop in Seattle don't remember what it was called. All in all on help whatsoever sorry.

  • thanks for all your help everyone!
checked out a few places, managed to get everything, including a frame off craigs list for $40, just need a wheelset now!
tempted just to get a decent set and bring them back with me.
yeah had a walk around hastings, main, gastown, commercial area. some good shops!

i managed to get a place downtown, just off robson. looked everywhere but this was the only place that would do a 3 month lease.

gonna head to OCB tomorrow i think, see what theyve got. and ill go over to the sports exchange place.

again thanks for your help, and if you have any other suggestions of things to do while im here, thatd be great

    cheers

  • This thread just answered all my questions! Awesome.

How was your time in Vancouver? I know this was like 3 years ago now, but I guess it's worth asking. I'm traveling there this spring and was wondering where I might pick up a bike? I'll be there for a year, so may invest a little more in whatever I pick up, and try and get it shipped back when I come home.

  • I've recently moved over here from London with the girlfriend (who is from Vancouver originally). Depending on what kind of bike you want, there are a few places to look. Craigslist always seems to have stuff - but you won't save much money on a track bike if that's what you're looking for.
Because they've totally fallen from fashion, you can pick up a nice 1990s / early 2000s mountain bike for very little, between $50 and $200 ($200 will get you quite a lot of 90's steel MTB).

I brought my own Gazelle road bike over from london, but am on the lookout for a mountain bike to mess about on as there are some really nice trails here; mostly in North Vancouver, but also some off-road sections around stanley park and other parts of the waterfront (have never seriously mountain biked, and have no illusions of being successful, but would be nice to mess around and worry less about breaking things).
Even if you don't end up doing much off-road, I feel like a steel/rigid mountain bike is great value all-rounder - they are so ubiquitous here that they're less likely to attract the attention of bike thieves, than say a 'fixie gear bike'. Especially when you lock up outside that cool new bar that's next door to that crack-hotel on East Hastings St (it might happen one day...).

I'm also planning on using a mountain bike for some light touring on vancouver island / sunshine coast, which might be something you want to think about (the scenery is pretty incredible here, would be a shame not to do some longer rides).

  • Ride On Again bikes on West Broadway in Kitsilano also has a very nice selection of older road and mountain bikes, from $100 an up. some are a bargain (especially when you know that it's been given a once over by a bike shop, and saves you a sometimes time wasting trip to see something from a craigslist ad).

  • Anybody know where I can rent a decent road bike in Vancouver?

staying there for 5 days after a snowbaording trip, with the amount of excess baggage we already have and with all the travelling brining my own isn't practical.

  • Anybody know where I can rent a decent road bike MTB in Vancouver?
    Indra pls.

  • Anyone have any more recent experience with Vancouver? Off for a week on thursday..

  • @IR did you do any cycling while there?

  • I recently moved to the Sea to Sky area and am looking for a local bike forum/sales listings site in the Vancouver area to plug a LFGSS-shaped hole... Any tips?
