  • Does anyone here suffer from Tennis Elbow?
I've been suffering for a couple of months at least now, and although it hasn't been diagnosed (off to the doctors this week) I'm pretty sure thats what it is.

Whatever it is, I'm hoping it wont keep me off the bike, so want to give my arm as much help as possible.
There are a variety of elbow braces/supports out there, can anyone recommend anything they have found useful?

Fluff I know you have some experience of elbow/arm injury so wondered what you found helped.

    Cheers all.

  • give up tennis, it's for bennys

  • Fluff I know you have some experience of elbow/arm injury

    understatement of the year.

    plenty of time left though.

  • Does anyone here suffer from Tennis Elbow?

No, but I've been getting a bit of football earache of late. There's a lot of it about...

  • make sure you are using the right grip size, makes a big difference...

  • give up tennis, it's for bennys

    I knew it'd be you...

Apparently only 5% people who have tennis elbow actually play it.

    I'm not one of them.

If I'd had told you I thought I had Epicondylitis you would have told me to fuck off

  • No, but I've been getting a bit of football earache of late. There's a lot of it about...

    Pistanittus would be my diagnosis

  • Although called tennis elbow, lateral epicondylitis is much more commonly seen in people who are over using their arm doing something else

    Profuse masturbation?

  • yes i do have had immense pain since august having failed to improve with physio i am now having the steriod injection on the 8th jan hopefully this will help

  • Pistanittus would be my diagnosis

Yeah, there's a bug going round...

  • Its actually the first time ive heard of this condition, ive had issues like that mainly with my shoulders but also with spine & other joints all my life.

They are all well loose and can get strained/dislocated real easy.

Im attempting to put on some muscle this winter, hopefully it will help.

  • Boo. Sweetie that sucks. I don't know much about how tennis elbow works and not at drinks tonight to chat. You can definitely have my brace if it'll be useful, looks a bit like this if you don't remember...

When I first started riding again, I went to Brixton Cycles and we spent ages figuring out the best stem and bar combination to put as little strain as possible on the elbow. My prob was that I could only straighten my arm to about 35 degrees AND couldn't lean any weight on it, use fingers well, twist my wrist or arm, take shock of the bumps in the road and may other horrible things. There's loads more I haven't remembered but to start with you could think about:

    • Switching your brake on your bars to your good side
    • Getting big fuckoff padded gloves (your elbow takes all the vibrations, bumps etc. - that was one of the most painful bits for me)
    • Big wide risers (wider ones mean less putting weight on elbow when riding and also weight in different place to usual)
    • More spacers for stem. Will make your bike look like a giraffe and you look like a straightbacked little old lady, but again, stops you leaning so much weight on arms.
    • Really padded grips

You can try my big wide granny bars and I also have a lot of leftover codeine :D

  • it's probably made worse by the hunched shouldered hipster riding on the narrow tops riding position with the elbows locked.

  • yes i do have had immense pain since august having failed to improve with physio i am now having the steriod injection on the 8th jan hopefully this will help

Does it hinder your use of punctuation?

  • yes along with my concentration and typing

  • if it bothers you i will correct it !

Hipster? heheh I'm too old for that!
I generally ride in a pretty upright and open position, and dont put much strain on my arms when I ride, my brake is on the left - so thats not a problem. My bars aren't that chopped and I always wear padded gloves and have padded grips. To be honest I don't think this a riding injury, probably more computer/ps3 use - although i've been using computers heavily for the past 20 years and it hasnt been a problem until now.
    Maybe I'm just getting old...

    EDIT:

Fluff that brace looks fucking scary I don't think I will need something as evil as that!
I'm thinking more along this line: hope it includes the nice young man

  • any kind of brace or support bandage is worth a try , i was advised not to ride for a few weeks just to let it settle.
hope you find a solution soon it can be complete agony

  • It's flared up over xmas, during which I've done bugger all riding..although I have done rather a lot of ps3-ing. I think it may be more Prince of Persia and Guitar hero Elbow ...
Have ordered something like the above which should at least give it some support whilst I get it properly diagnosed.

  • lol hmm that sounds familiar. well good luck hope it works

  • Sorry to hear that Clefty, it sucks. A friend of mine is a sign language interpreter and suffered from it, I think he's fine now. I'll check what he did.

The cold weather is probably not helping at all. As usual I am going to recommend acupuncture or osteopathy. My acupuncturist is in London Bridge, osteopath between Tooting Bec and Wandsworth Common.

  • My friend Andrew is a GP and one day a middle aged woman presented with symptoms of tennis elbow. But she'd never played tennis. He asked her what she did for a living. "I'm a dominatrix" was the unexpected answer. Turns out all the whipping was the source of the problem. That, as they say, is a true story.

I occasionally suffer from housemaid's knee. Usually after a good night in.

  • try some anti-inflammatory gel, perhaps. i'm not sure of the brand name here... active ingredient is... diclofenac... sold as... Voltarol!

in my experience it eases the painful symptoms while you get on with the resting and bracing business.

You should have seen my arse.

  • I get golfers elbow having never swung a golf bat in my life, which is the same but other side of the arm, think as the palm is facing upward the inside of the elbow.

The only cure according to the doc is rest, but with the proviso that if it makes you miserable then dont rest, this was after complaining it wasn't practical for me to not do the activity that was causing the problems (cycling)

I was advised the best way to alleviate symptoms are icing the tendons which have become inflamed as much as possible, and I find keeping my elbow warm with armwarmers or elbow supports helps to stop it flaring up. Hence my lovely yellow arm warmers that I know you love so much Clefty!
