  • City would trade all three domestic cups to get the UCL monkey off their back.

They’ve done the treble before anyway.

  • Big four plus Arsenal and Spurs sneaking off to a euro super league apparently. I can’t see it personally. The FIFA sanctions will probably end in a World Cup ban for players.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/apr/18/five-english-clubs-sign-up-to-european-super-league-report-says

  • Terrible fucking news, end of the game as we know it. End of my support as an Arsenal fan, never thought I'd outlive the club

  • Part of me wonders whether it’s posturing to be honest. They’re looking for a better deal from UEFA - like guaranteed entry to the champions league, more rights etc.

I turned my back on proper support for one of the six clubs years ago - it just seems weird supporting Franchise FC.

If it goes ahead, I expect you’ll see League Two struggling to support professional football inside five years.

  • Would English football actually be worse off without the "Big Six"?

It would be terrible for fans of those clubs - but surely only Americans and others with no taste or connection to football would actually watch the European Super League?

And we'd be left with a more competitive, possibly cheaper competition, which might eventually become more popular anyway.

The Big Six would shrivel up and die, or come back with their tails between their legs.

  • If clubs could function without crazy debt and on reasonable ticket prices people would go and watch. We've come a long way in a short time though, how could premier league clubs outside the 6 work with reduced income.

  • did i hear right fifa threatening to ban players from world cups rtc if this goes ahead. I cant see players giving that up, the ones that did would be lower level reducing the wow factor and viewing pull. The star players hold a huge ammount of power now.

really shit that the big 6 have done this.

  • surely only Americans and others with no taste or connection to football would actually watch the European Super League?

    Aw, bless.

  • How much would the income be reduced?

Surely there'd still be an appetite for watching live football on TV if it were "just" the Premier League, football league and cups.

The reaction from football fans across Europe seems wholly negative and so presumably there's still a lot of people who'd be willing to watch the left behind leagues.

The Super League sounds properly shite as well.

  • I hate the continuing comodification and 'branding' of modern football clubs, it's done nothing but distance real fans and churn out dead-eyed Premier League loving zombies... This will kill football if it happens and I'll probably start supporting my local non-League team, Peninsula Power...

Please, no!?! Hoping it's just a flex by the big clubs...

  • how could premier league clubs outside the 6 work with reduced income.

By cutting their main outgoing by paying lower wages. Then the standard drops and more fans watch the Super League.

  • I just hope it’s set up so that the Super League has storylines similar to WWE.

Would love to see Guardiola smash a folding chair over Klopp’s head.

  • it sounds shit but essentially isn't this exactly what the Premier League did to the football league in the 90s? And wasn't the Champions league a response to the big clubs across Europe threatening to do this a while back too?

    Follow the money

  • Travelling to Europe to see away games is not going to be that practical either. It seems unlikely to survive or even reach the first season but there will be financial winners and losers in the process.

I'm happy to watch league games in the local park, I struggle to see the value of watching the current crop of super talent from afar.

  • As per my other answer, I think standard is more of an issue on TV than it is live. The engagement with a live match and the crowd banter are the best reasons to watch football. Also the people you go with, people you meet. It has all been f**ked by TV money.

  • How much would the income be reduced?

Surely there'd still be an appetite for watching live football on TV if it were "just" the Premier League, football league and cups

I'd imagine that overseas income from China, the US, etc would be pretty heavily impacted.

It sounds like it will be bollocks but I'm sure there are plenty who'll watch it.

  • What's amusing about the so called big six is that neither Man City nor Tottenham Hotspur have ever won the European Cup. Steaua București and Red Star Belgrade have both won the big cup!

It really is the revenge of the Glazers. The Agnelli family should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Horrible news about the European Super League. Feels a bit like the day football died.

Can someone explain to me on what basis Spurs and Arsenal made the cut? Neither have won anything in Europe for sometime nor have they consistently played in the CL over the last decade.

My best guess is they made the cut because the Germans are not part of the setup right now.

  • £revenue based on number of international fans they bring to the table.

Not seen a Leicester or West Ham shirt on sale in HK yet Arsenal and Spurs both have club kit plus lots of athleisure wear for sale out here. The only toffees you see are by the tills at M&S, even then they’re from Devon.

  • "the 12 founding members plus the three unnamed clubs they expect to join soon, and five sides who qualify annually according to their domestic achievements"
    Sounds shit.

  • They should be immediately ejected from their national leagues and players banned from other competitions. Won't take long for it to dissolve then.
In reality it's probably just a bargaining move to wring more money out of the Champions League.

  • Presumably, given the UK clubs already in there are the ones that win most 'domestic achievements' already, we'll never see another UK club playing in this.

I wonder quite how much of the Premier League's income depends on the big clubs plus Spurs? I suspect the answer is 'most of it' and I doubt they (the PL) are in a position to tell them to do one over it.

  • I would like to hear the case for it. So far the radio has been full of the usual talking heads telling us how bad it is but can anything that Boris Johnson, UEFA, FIFA and Rio Ferdinand disagrees with be all bad?

None of the talking heads has said anything about how corrupt UEFA and FIFA are and how they have skimmed millions if not billions of the wealth created by 11 of the 12 breakaway clubs. I would have more sympathy with their views if they had not been part of the formation of the Premier/Sky league and the current UEFA establishment.

I hope that this is just a power play to re-balance the power within the game. It is in need of re-balance.

  • Quite an impressive fuck off from all the supporters groups - as if the clubs give a shit about them.

Anyway - good riddance. Looking forward to a proper tilt at the title next year.

  • AFAIUI it's a midweek tournament on top of domestic commitments?
I guess they'll fuck off the cups, but still play for the PL.
