  • Well, it’s hard to say. Trying to think through what would create a feeling of drag and a hot smell:

    • handbrake on
    • Brake pads (in main brake caliper, if separate from hand brake) dragging
    • Wheel bearing FUBAR
    • Suspension so far out of adjustment that the wheel/tyre is rubbing on something

Just wondering if you can see one wheel in a noticeably different position than the other. But really it probably needs someone mechanically inclined looking at it.

  • I’ll have a look a the wheels in a bit.
The drive to Waitrose was without the handbrake on and wheels were a bit hot.

It’s hard not to think “kwik fit touched it, they fucked it”.

  • Also “mechanically inclined” is a phrase I’ve never heard associated with me.

  • I would never trust Kwik- Fit with alignment. A work colleague changed a ball joint and track rod end last year, counted the turns off and on etc and it drove OK steering wheel slightly off so he took it to Kwik fit for a tyre and had alignment, they couldn't give him a print out as printer wasn't working :(
Driving home it was all over the place, they insisted it was set up fine and there was something worn on his car :(

I had a quick look at work and you could see by eye that it was 'toe out' way too far so we set it up by eye and string so it was driveable. He got his money back from Kwik Fit and had the tracking done properly at a local garage. Absolute con artists in my opinion.

  • I met Taylor with his E24 635i at some Retro BMW meets in Sydenham about 2016 he seemed like a nice bloke but as he has grown on social media seeing some of the stunts they pull like buying a cheap car and just smashing it to f**k on green lanes seemed a bit Dickish, he acts like a spoilt kid sometimes.
Nicking service history to drive the price down is proper C*nt move though, and the issue with Josh seems like he realised it is going to affect their business plan so they better apologise, rather than act responsibly in the first place.

  • Just been to see an XC70 T6 and really surprised how underwhelmed I was. Definitely expected it to not be a drivers car but steering was really vague and I was surprised by how small the boot looked. Was ready to drive it home but heading back in my Audi. Didn't help that I parked my Audi next to it, it just looks so much better.

Managed to stem my impulsive nature of just buy it and figure it out later but now making the 2 hour drive back to Wiltshire.

  • I don’t think I’ll ever understand how mechanics at brand name aren’t as good as mechanics at local.

Handbrake cable is seized is my bet. Drive it again about a kilometer and see if one wheel gets hot .

  • Yeah, or maybe cable is pinched/trapped on one side?

  • Went to Brockley and back, no hot wheels.

  • Well one wheel was warmer but not like last night.

  • When are you around tomorrow?

  • Sorry to be that cunt, but Kwik fit are terrible. It is all about the upsell.

  • Not to be rude, you met the guy once. Now I trust (hold your opinions in high esteem)your opinion/ know you are an honest person after quite a while of knowing you on line. This goes the same for NurseH.

The more you hear about Taylor the more I would not trust him to be honest.

  • If you are using a Tesla drive unit, either model S or model 3, you can buy a Quaife diff for them. I would 100% do this myself but that’s because the conversion I’m planning is for a fast-ish, well handling, fun car that’s not my daily.
Torquevectoring? I’ve not seen this been done in a conversion yet.

  • Five complete bikes in an old Skoda Fabia, plus one tall+fat guy (me).
    That'll do, Pig. That'll do.
    Excuse the croissant flakes.

  • As @lynx said it's all about the upsell, and Main Dealers are heading that way too.

When I left BMW main dealer in 2019 I said to the manager the techs you are employing now are all 'No fault found, pads & discs all round' :(

  • Meeting someone at a car meet isn't really getting to know them, but the more you hear from others is that he isn't afraid of screwing people over :(

  • Yeah I just think it’s so weird the shafts (R180) are pink and not just black

Did you get the brakes sorted on your forester in the end?

  • Did you get the brakes sorted on your forester in the end?

I took @NurseHolliday's advice and bedded them in and that helped a lot, and I'm also digging in a bit more. The rotors are cooked, quite a bit of vibration when slowing down from high speeds, so I'm sure they'll get changed along with the pads at the next service. 🤑💸

I should probably call it quits and get some Brembos, right? 🤣

  • Any recommendations on BMW servicing SW London/Surrey area? I’ve been pointed towards KMK Autos in Croydon.

  • I can only endorse this decision.

  • It’s ok, I’m cancelling my appt with Kwik fit and going to my local dudes if the wheels are hot again.

  • If I were you I'd phone and ask what the settings were before and after adjustments and what they did as I'm not sure rear wheels do much tracking wise apart from stay straight ahead as kwic fit don't do caster/camber.

  • That’s helpful thanks!
