  • My Lovely missus has moved to Madrid. I have been told over and over again that people in Madrid don't ride and it's not a very bike friendly city, so finding a fixed gear culture there was pretty much useless. Well I have found one! Thing that's cool is it looks like it's a really small group of hardcore messenger types. I feel like I have found some rare lost tribe of pygmies or something. As much as I love it, the fixed gear scene or whatever you call it has become a bit of a monster in many ways. I'm looking forward to meeting these guys and maybe riding a bit with them. They will either welcome me or kill me, Get a rescue team ready!

  • Ooh. I say that this needs a poll!

    Elguapo will be...

    a) Welcomed by the natives
    b) Die a horrible death, be eaten by the natives and have his skull mounted on a pole as a warning to others

  • I always thought spain had an enormous cycling culture, im sure youd find lots of fixed riders anywhere the terrains suitable?

Good luck on your visit anyhow.

  • I promise not to go as an ambassador of LFGSS just in case I end up in some macabre local pallea.

  • "It's a cook book! It's a cooook booooooook!!!!"

I think Spain does have a big cycling culture. But apparently Madrid is not so great with the bikes. I've been told this by lots of people who live there thats it's a bit thin. Lots of park riding but no street riding. I'll find out when I get there.

  • I cycled in Madrid, there's a few bikes on the roads but not many. Mostly you go down the park where thousands upon thousands of lardy middle-aged guys in full lycra cruise around on their full-sus mountain bikes. Didn't see any fixed but it was Easter, nobody was working, so the couriers wouldn't have been active.

I went to the tourist office where the lovely lady pointed out the cycle lane (there's one of them, it goes down to the park) and was very perturbed by my plan to cycle on the roads.

You can take your bike on the metro at the weekend, which is fun.

Out of town, in the countryside, lots of roadies. Trying to get out of town from Central Madrid is quite a challenge. I did find a route, but it wasn't fun.

  • Thats exactly what I have been told by several people now. I'm not crazy.

  • Elguapo is going to be fine!! Madrid rocks and he can be a pioneer!!

  • I'm going over again for New Year and I was over last month trying to spread the word about London hosting the European Bike Polo Champs next year. Saw 2 fixed riders but that was it.

If you meet anyone then it would be great if you could pass their details on, we need a Spanish team in the Euro's.

  • BTW, if people tell you the traffic's bad there it's nothing compared to London, riding round is easy easy - and Madrid is small, so you can cover a lot of ground without any problems. Do be careful about locking/hiding away your bike, I was told they go in seconds flat over there (much like here). Fortunately most hotels, apartment blocks, etc have big hallways and so on, so off-street locking isn't hard. All the places I stayed over there they were more than happy to tuck my bike away somewhere safe inside the building.

  • In Spain people ride bikes, a lot, but no in the cities. The culture of cicly club is huge and every saturday and sunday morning there are meetings to go to ride. Also montain bike is pretty strong, thanks that in nearly every citie you can be in half and hour in good spots. Sadly cities are no bike friendlys, we still have the mentality that the roads belongs to the cars and more is it can in the cities.

This is an easter parade hood? Holy shit! What ever happened to the easter bunny, colored eggs and marshmello peeps? Gulp!

  • Yeah, if you go to Madrid in Easter its well impressive, massive parades round every corner. The guys there were struggling to light their candle in the pouring rain, in the end the whole parade gave up and legged it back under cover!

  • im sorry but i would still not step outside my house if they were standing outside, being indian

  • They aren't KKK, they're Catholics!

Saw loads of them in Italy all in different colours. It was like Ming's palace in Flash Gordon.

  • its still an intimidating look...

  • Yep, it doesn't exactly say 'join the church, it's really fun!'
