  • Suffering from having by that point done around 130-140 miles. Hackney-Dunwich 112 miles, then Dunwich-Ipswich around 30 miles. All of it at a good average. My favourite ride of the year, no contest.

Hmm - it was much longer the way I did it. I think I must have got loster than I remember.

  • wow 500 miles in 24hrs
thats gonna be tricky to beat, but fuck it, lets give it a go !

@ object ..... we all did it geared as we had to crack on a a decent speed, but fixed would be possible, fun even ! providing we leave an hour or two earlier,
it only really gets hilly in the guilford area nothing like ditchling beacon though

He, he. The distance itself isn't really the problem, it's things like navigating. Luckily, my riding mate Ian is an excellent navigator and we almost never get lost. On Dunwich-Ipswich, the signage into town is very poor. It's easy to follow up to about Woodbridge, but then it gets more difficult. (One thing I simply don't understand about small towns is why you almost never have signage to the train station right from the outskirts.)

I remember riding back to Ipswich in 2007 with a mate (not Ian, he lives near Dunwich) and he had two punctures, front and rear. A large group overtook us while he was fixing the second. We carried on and close to Ipswich we met the group again coming out of a side street, as they had got lost completely. After you've been on a long night ride, it's all too easy to think that navigating by day is simple ...

Yeah, Ipswich train station is fairly difficult to find without local knowledge.. You could always get a train back from Woodbridge though..

Hippy and I rode back to Ipswich this year, we bailed at Westerfield with 4 miles to go. Stopped at the train station, "how long til the next train?" asked hippy, "8 minutes" I replied. "Fuck it then, this'll do".

  • Hippy's idea is a good one for him. All he'd have to do is present himself to the nearest immigration office and he'd be shipped back home within a few hours. He only lives a few minutes from Heathrow in any event!

    Compromisists.

  • If Ipswich is hard to find, we did the right thing. I'd still be circling Ips now, staggering into Tesco for food every now and then, asking locals where the station is.

  • hello guys no idea what your final plan is,but i like the idea of a epic,a bit of a adventure on the the bike,i will keep an eye on your plans and try to hook for a ride before
