'Alleycat' cyclists hold illegal race through Capital's streets

    **Published Date: **06 December 2008
A SMALL band of cyclists from around the UK held what is believed to be the first St Andrew's Day "Alleycat" bicycle race in Edinburgh.
Alleycat racing is an informal cycle race that is thought to have its origins in Toronto, Canada, in 1989 where a group of bicycle messengers got together to race through the city.

Alleycat racing is largely illegal in the UK as organised bicycle races require the consent of the local authority, and is generally reliant on the support of the police.

The Alleycat was organised by Edinburgh Fixed Gear, a group of bicycle and skateboard aficionados, and also featured cyclists from London.

Neither the council nor police received notification of the race.
