  • I hope you feel proud of yourself now Clefty, bringing down a giant like that for a sake of a few mint creams.

  • What could you buy in Woolies that a supermarket does now not sell? They should have gone back to selling crap fishing rod sets with massive plastic floats and sea fishing hooks.....

  • Goodbye to the stink hole.

made sense in 1984 when you got your 7" singles from there, but since then it has not defined itself in any way.

It's all about Pound Stretcher this recession.

  • the only good thing about woolies was the pick n mix. i went in one ten years ago and thought it was total shite, i'm amazed it hasn't gone sooner.

  • Gonna be a dry old christmas this year...

  • remember when I was little the annual Woolies Christmas advert was just about the most exciting thing to happen - they used to be 3 minute epics....

I blame their fall from favour with the Great British Public**™ **on their adoption of a puppet sheep and dog in their adverts....

  • the only reason they stayed afloat this long was the boomtime of the last ten years..

MFI also got the admin in, I'm quite amused by that.

+1 I was expecting them to die long ago.

Woolworths sell the same crap as a 'discount household shop' , but have horribly organised crowded cluttered shops and high prices.

Places like wilkinsons sell much more/better stuff much cheaper, and are more pleasant to navigate. They even have bike bits & home brew equipment!

  • Just about to say Wilkinsons is the place for P&M

  • Forum member loses job because of recession: outpouring of sympathy and offers of help.
Thousands of store workers face the same: outpouring of jokes and good riddances.

third worst london courier loses job because of incident with goat: street parties all over the North of England.

  • interesting Woolies facts :

1.until a few years ago, they were the largest music retailer in UK.

    1. They are, and have always been, a massive US company.

( at least so I was told - you may well prove me wrong)

BOOM! goes the logic bomb.. spoiling our fun ;)

Aussies: Does this Woolworths have anything to do with Safeway (previously known as Woolworths) in Oz?

  • yes, i expect so, they're huge

  • Used to be part of the kingfisher group (B&Q, Comet amongst others). Kingfisher sold of some a few years ago but couldn't give Woolies away. Thay split it from the main group and let it run as a standalone company.

I had a Saturday job there many moons ago.

  • it's origins are in the U.S., though ,right? if you go all the way back, which we won't, if you don't mind ( spot the film quote)

  • the different woolworths around the world are all independent; the company was divided up a few decades ago.

  • Having been IN a Woolworths about 4 years ago, i can say ;

    Fuck Woolworths.

it's a fucking miracle it lasted this long, it was only the OAPs keeping it going, now they're dying, where's its market?

  • +1 for they sell nothing a standard supermarket doesn't.
+1 for surprised they have lasted so long.
Lets hope it aint too long before a few other go the same way.

  • the different woolworths around the world are all independent; the company was divided up a few decades ago.

    OOF! Keeping-up-to-date-with-the-retail-world FAIL, Hippy.

  • I thinking "keeping up to date with supermarkets and their financial stability" is a bigger FAIL. :P

I think people's comments are aimed not at the staff but at Woolworth™ itself, the large US owned multinational corporate behemoth who failed to define their market and over 30 years evolved into a basic high street box shifter.

  • Does this Woolworths have anything to do with Safeway (previously known as Woolworths) in Oz?

    No, different companies.

  • Cool.

  • Right, I have to know, how does one do that little superscript TM? I've wondered for about 25 years now.
