Quitting smoking: Champix?

  • Top man!
like Teenslain, the weed has broken me loads in the past...
So glad to be off it, head is clearer than it's been for decades!!

  • Just read the last couple of pages and it appears smoking spliffs has been getting people back on the cigs in the past. Last time i tried to quit I went from a £1 rollie habit to a £10 a day weed habit and kidded myself that I had quit smoking, will I ever be able to enjoy a joint ever again?

  • I don't want to smoke it every day, I would say a couple of evenings a month.

  • The thing about having a joint after a few weeks without tobacco is that it's never as nice as the idealised joint you have in your mind - instead, it'll taste overpoweringly of tobacco rather than dope, give you an instant massive nicotine rush rather than a gentle stone and be an all-round disappointing experience. 'least that's what I found last time I slipped from the wagon...

  • If you can do without the weed for a few days, then dinnae bother with it at all :(

  • I reckon I am gonna give it 6 weeks then maybe have one if I fancy it.

  • Is it the smoking, or the being stoned that you are after?

  • If you must smoke the righteous herb, get a pipe... Keep tobacco out of it...

I've probably said this before but I was smoking 20-30 spliffs a day at one point (summer of '93 IIRC)... Of course, I still classified myself as a non-smoker... Yeah, right... ;]

  • Year and two months for me- very glad I quit now.

  • I reckon I am gonna give it 6 weeks then maybe have one if I fancy it.

Both I expect, I enjoy the whole sort of ritual of smoking a joint from rolling it, to smoking it and the getting high at the end, tonight it was definitely the smoking it more than the getting high as when I had a few tokes on the inhalator the urge went. I used to smoke it every day, but knocked that on the head about a year ago and now I just enjoy the occasional couple every now and again.

  • You don't need it, trust me... I know you already know that tho'...

  • True, I think I will just forget about buying any myself but in the future if I'm out and about or at a mates I may have a few tokes if I am offered some.

  • and none say until the summer. I was kidding myself earlier on that I would be ok. Must read this thread to remind me of the slippery slope if I start trying to convince myself again and have a few tokes on the inhilator

  • One toke and you're dead meat... < My experience...

  • That's 2 whole weekends without any smoke passing my lips. Thats the longest I have gone in 10 years.

  • Good work, keep it up... thumbs up, high five

  • Well done Jimm - that's awesome. Keep it up!

This may sound weird, but it feels like my whole perception of the passing time has been thrown off since quitting.

Not weird, but how do you mean?

  • I haven't been to the pub yet for more than 1 pint so I am kind of dreading that. Might stick to shandys the 1st couple of times so I can enjoy the drinks but not get drunk enough to fall off the wagon (is it even possible to get pissed drinking shandys?)

  • Does anyone have any advice for coming of Champix?

4 weeks in/stopped and feel great. I have absolutely no cravings/ desire to smoke whatsoever.
The smell of smoke grosses me out... I'm feeling very confident!

So, i want to get of Champix now but i'm concerned as i don't want to ruin all the good work and do this the wrong way.

I asked my GP but they seemed rather clueless when i asked if i should cut down on dose or just stop taking altogether?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Like, I can be doing something - working, faffing online, reading a book, riding, whatever - and my idea of how much time has passed when I check the clock seems completely off. It's as if time has slowed down or something. At least I'm getting way more done.

I'm now a week off tobacco and today is my 3rd day off weed, having been a daily pothead for 7 years. I've tried to quit the smokes whilst still getting high before, but I always ended up adding baccie to the weed after a while. This time its everything - no smoking anything. The night-time withdrawal is pretty bleak, but it feels great to take control.

I haven't taken Champix but shouldn't you finish the whole course? It's twelve weeks, isn't it?
You're probably best off asking your GP/smoking cessation nurse...

  • Apparently the 12 weeks really only meant for the folk who struggle through.

I was told by the GP that if i feel as positive as i do, then i could stop taking the Champix.
If i do the 12 weeks, then the dose is reduced in the last week??

I would rather not take the Champix any longer than I absolutely need to as it's not got the greatest reputation in the world and my sleep is screwed up too!

Dreams i'm having are amazing though!

Good man! yup, i've quit both too.
Feeling in control again is great!
In many ways, i think the weed was doing more harm than the baccy?!

I see what you mean re time.

  • I still get the time-stretch thing (gave up at Easter), but I think that's just because I'm not punctuating the day with fag breaks so I'm at my desk most of the time... I do get lots more work done, which is a result...
