  • Could a capable, not so rich ultra runner just follow the course and beat everyone to prove a point?
Maybe the competition is still tough

  • Article does a great job of selling it, and the fact that it’s the BBC means tons of free publicity for the organisers and eventual participants.

Also highlights a good opportunity for a few elitist companies to sponsor their vp of business development and send them on a mission.

  • This would be hilarious. I’d put a few quid behind an ultra runner ‘on here’ to give it a go. Might consider hiding their identity somehow.

  • there'll always be opportunistic people trying to fleece the rich of their hard earned with these tailored premium life experiences. so long as they're not trying to force people out of enjoying that opportunity themselves under their own power then let the rich eat themselves.

that said the broke and bitter poor person in me hopes it is a total fyre festival situation and look forward to the photos of reduced price supermarket snacks at the aid stations.

  • Doesn't seem that different to any other luxury extreme holiday. Given that it will have no prestige as a race, (it's not an ultrarace, its a 'race experience'), I don't see why anyone cares.

  • Is it that different from nonsense like the Tour de France? How much does that cost per rider and how much hardware do they move around for a bunch of people on bikes?

  • . (Removed Self-evident statement, not worth posting.)

  • Football: billions of hours spent globally watching (usually, slightly) rich people run, kick a ball and fake injury. Millions spent on cloths with certain colours and patterns, and on massive buildings that sit empty for most of their lifespan.

  • You forgot the part about it being the world's favourite sport because it appeals to human nature, provides escapism and is fun as fuck for billions of people to watch and play.

  • Oh, boy. Why not go derail that thread, not this one quite so soon again. Friendliest thread on the forum, I'm sure you'll find.

  • So Ben Wallace says this royal yacht that the royals don't want has a 'firm' cost of £250m. What are the odds of it costing north of £1/2bn... £3/4bn... £1bn...

Actually, fuck it - give Grayling the project and watch it spiral to more than the two aircraft carriers...

  • meh, there's probably a lot of people who can't do climbing Everest who now have time and money to burn. If they want to pay £15k for a free tshirt and a warm towel after running 35 miles then let them, more power to the organisers.

  • So Ben Wallace says this royal yacht that the royals don't want has a 'firm' cost of £250m.

Considering that private donations to the Royal Yacht are over £100m now (with £50m coming from one donor), if they can keep it to £250m its not too bad!

  • How many homeless people could we put in permanent accommodation for £100m?

  • A little over 250? Maybe another 50 if they put up hammocks in some of the larger spaces.

There are new build property developments in the Midlands that costs developers much less than £100k for a 4 bedroom house including land costs. Sometimes close to £50k. I think you'd be able to manage a lot more than 250!

  • You're costing per flat is more than my budget for flat searching at the moment.

  • more power to the organisers.

increase the wealth gap too, that by encouraging rich people to spend money that should have gone to something like, i don't know, a pay raise, better working condition, less hours, etc. for their employees.

  • As does cycling to a lesser degree?

@itsbruce Oh, boy. Why not go derail that thread, not this one quite so soon again. Friendliest thread on the forum, I'm sure you'll find.

Hardly a derail, nor was it intended to go that way. I took your prior comment onboard, but I can’t even respond to someone’s post now?

  • Double if they sleep head to tail.

  • Sumo's question was about permanent accommodation, not cheap shit houses built on floodplains, though.

  • I don't follow. Do you mean the people paying to do this stupid "running experience" or the organisers of the event?

  • It's incomprehensible (to me) to spend that much on a "running experience", but for some people that's less than their monthly mortgage payment. And I know I've spent roughly the same as my monthly mortgage payment on a holiday in the past.
