• Oh, and I've missed a bit somewhere and it's still creeping through, let me know.

  • You mean... like how I've just configured it?

    That's better than nothing.

  • Hehe. I might ignore the poll and just leave in place what I've just configured.

  • I must spread some reputation around before giving it to VelocityBoy again.

  • ^repped
    Just because I could ;)

  • So what do you say now?

    +1 com
    +1 ve com
    Commed
    Neg commed
I'd com you if I could
    Commies?

i think you say nothing, its just between the two people, and no one else knows.

  • im happy with that...it was the league table that i was against. good work Mr VB

It's not like Private Messages... the rep system is built in all over the place to be visible. Private Messages are built in to be private. I may have made the rep system look like it's private, but it's not. Don't assume it is, as there may be cracks.

I thought the problem with the old system that it was so public people where being snooty about it, and changing the way they act for it, this is just all the good (little ego booster/curshers) and none of the bad (highschoolesque popularity contest)

  • Yes, the old system was very public, and the new system is more private. But I don't want anyone to ever be under an illusion that the comments system (a.k.a. reputation) is private. It is not. Future upgrades might expose reputation, and you shouldn't use that part of the forum to exchange private data. I may have hidden some of the front-end, but that does not make it private. Hell, the admin control panel allows me to view the reputation... whereas I have no means at all to view the private messages. So one is private (PMs) and the other is not private (reputation/comments).

  • you coming out to zombie thrashing bad today?

  • I thought it's the other way around? Zombies will die apparently.

  • Cheers Veeb

You do realize that, with the present system of leaving an invisible '+1' or '-1', you wont be able to bring back rep like it was in the old days? Either you'd have to include the new reps with the old reps, which would be unfair as people wouldn't have the foreknowledge that it was coming back, or you'd have to exclude the new reps, which would also be kind of unfair as the forum would have evolved since public rep was cancelled.

Personally, I think you just brought rep in a bit too early. It works better on bigger forums where there are lots and lots of newbies everyday who just need an answer and need a reference guide as to who is an established forumer and who isn't. It isn't really as applicable in the context of a community-based forum like FGSS, where there aren't (or weren't) well-established heirarchies, and there wasn't a set of guidelines or framework as to how rep should have been applied : some people i'm sure were repping out to the max, and some were leaving occasional +1's, some were repping for helpful advice, some were repping for posts which were funny.

  • Yeah, we should have another poll... Or, er, something... ;]

  • FWIW the forum feels a much better place without all the rep...for me anyhow...

    repped for that.

    Let us have a graph.

  • repped for that.

    d'oh! :D

  • I just tried to rep AndyP (for this http://www.londonfgss.com/thread13256.html), but it said I need to spread the love. Is the delay still necessary now that it's not tied to a ranking system?

Hm, I've tried to com various people since the change but it hasn't allowed me a single time. I thought this might be because I'd commed them before but I'm getting a bit doubtful--could there be a bug somewhere in the current set-up, VB?

  • Works for me like it used to. That is, most people I can't give rep to because I've already given them some recently. But I do squeeze the odd one in (I just repped you and it worked fine).

Hm, I must be fixated on the same people I've commed before, then. Time to spread the love around as the Man says ...

  • spread some over here.
