Snapped chainring teeth

Posted on
  • I've managed to snap two teeth on my 49t 3/32 ofmega chainring.

LBS had a duraace for £40 (£60 retail apparently) 1/8" (rest of my drive is 1/8").

That's abit steep for me so I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on chainrings.

The BCD is across two arms right? missing one out..? I think it's 144mm or 135mm i'll check today.

    Cheers in advance.

  • BCD is the diameter on which the bolts sit, hence: Bolt Centre/Circle Diameter.

Easiest way to measure it is radius x2, i.e. from centre of one bolt to centre of crank/spider, then double it.

  • also, theres only a limited number of (common) bcd sizes, from the shrimpy to the fat; 110 (road inner standard), 130 (road outer standard), 135 (campy standard), & 144 (track standard).

or, you could just take in the chainring it self and hold it up to the new one, matching bolt holes.

  • Thanks Chris, i'll measure to make sure.

Carlito, we did hold up the dura ace to the other.. so I think it's 144mm. But i'll have a quick measure.

Any recommendations on what brand to go for?

  • ive got a gebhardt (sp?) 49t that cost like 30£ and has never given me issue, as well as a shimano 48t that cost 5£ out of a used part bin that hasnt given issue either. probly more depends on how you ride, how much you ride, etc. what does your wallet tell you?

  • My wallet screams for mercy. my legs ride my work commute daily... as fast as possible. Are yours both 1/8"? I'll measure my BCD and check on prices. Thanks!

  • Just for reference, another way to measure (sheldon) is bolt to bolt x1.7 (for 5 arm)

144mm is what I need. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

    Cheers again.

  • Sorted a new chainring and chain, went with sugino mighty competition 49t 1/8" only £20.

Running lovely and smooth now, as the chainring had been the last 3/32 component I was running.

Reps all round I think, cheers guys.

  • i run a 3/32 on front with rest 1/8" not an issue!

  • No, lots of people don't have a problem with the chainring being 3/32. But i've noticed an improvement moving to 1/8". Nothing spectacular, but a smoother feel. Possibly down to the old chainring.
