  • ;610286']Except the Euro champs are Aug. 1st and 2nd?

Ha - oh yeah, i was looking at the mess' champs. as you were

  • ;609511']On team night, games are shuffled out for all teams present with late-comers added on to the end. ...

So you can pick which teams you play then? i.e. to increase avg score you only play the less-skilled teams?

    .

  • if a team play two matches against easy teams, they could stop and be at the top of the league with max points eg 6/30 = 0.200 , plus 0.006

  • repost

  • Yep but then they'll eventually play a harder team evening it out. Even in the last league there were times that huge leaps were made by teams then huge drops and they played easier teams in a row and then harder teams. It all balanced out in the end.

Using the random team throw-in nights means teams could play other teams multiple times balancing it out even more so.

  • ;610236']1. start longterm league May 1
1.a. start longterm league May 1 with break mid league for Euro champs'.

    1. start a summer league May 1 base on averages to finish Aug./Sept.
    2. wait until Sept. to start longterm league with no summer league
    3. start summer league May 1 to finish in July based on points, then longterm winter league in Sept.

    any more options???

  • just for clarification, i'm abit confused about the avg. system... what is the ratio that people woud aim for? if you play three games and score your 15 goals, 3/15 (or any combination of win all games played) you come out with a .20 avg. but then adding a .001 per game played as incentive moves you further away from your target?

why don't you use a goals scored/games played ratio, then everyone should aim to have a 5? that makes more sense for adding incentives, and is more readable? also makes more sense, since we play most games to 5 points, if you use a system where teams are rated by points... it just seems to fit the game better.

    ie.
    team 1 - 28/6 = 4.667
    team 2 - 21/5 = 4.2
    team 3 - 12/3 = 4
    team 4 - 19/5 = 3.8

  • +1

  • But that looks like too much of an 'incentive' for playing more games. Seems to penalize those that can't play as many games too much.

  • maybe that's why i can't understand it, i don't understand baseball ;)

  • oops... edited my post.

My avg. rating was based on baseball batting averages but backwards.

You would aim for a .200 avg. the closer to 0.00 you get, the better you're going.
So for playing and winning 9 games, 9/45 = .200 but by playing 9 games you're .009 points closer to 0. so your avg is .191

  • But that looks like too much of an 'incentive' for playing more games. Seems to penalize those that can't play as many games too much.

not necessarily, it could go either way (same as the batting average one), it's still just an average. if you only play 3 games but win all three, you'll have an avg of 5 and have a higher avg than any team that played more games but lost any one of them, even if by only one point.

personally i think that without a minimum requirement for games played then an avg system promotes teams that play less games, since you could potentially weight your games to weaker teams then stop playing... not that i think anyone would really do this, i hope everyone who goes in on this wants to play polo, not do well on a table.

  • fuck me this is hardcore. You guys decide a system then someone explains it to me with little drawings and hand gestures...

  • oh and hassan I dropped my bike at cavendish yesterday for wheel repairs.. tell them it may look battered but they should treat it with love

  • hah, cool, alex will treat it well i'm sure

  • ;610364']But that looks like too much of an 'incentive' for playing more games. Seems to penalize those that can't play as many games too much.

No it doesn't, I see now. Yep. Indeed

    +1 for aiming for 5

  • I'll put a poll up after lunch if there are no more options than:

    1. Start longterm points based league May 1 with a break for Euro champs'.
    2. Start longterm points based league Sept 1 with no summer league
    3. Start summer points based league May 1 to end in July
    4. Start summer average based league May 1 to end in August

I personally think we can eliminate option 2 because at the end of the day, league participation is optional.

  • Sorry, but i don't have time to read all of that, and I don't think we need to have a vote. All we need to do is start a list for who would like to begin a league soonish, and then these people can vote on a date. This does not preclude Mike's option for team night or throw-ins or anything else. (Sorry Roxy, but I think league play is clearly optional).

    Teams for the league:

    1. Malice International
  • Personally, I don’t know if I could commit to playing a summer league. I was taking the league games way too seriously and I’d like to get back to playing for fun.

I would love to see the team night / average point system happen. It would be more relaxed, let new teams get involved when they want to, as they start playing, and give people enough flexibility with their time for the summer tournaments, or, dare I say it, having a life other than polo (family, friends, holidays?).

For all those in London who are already committing a shit-load of time to organise the Euros, a points system would be the chance to still play competitively, rather than miss out on a second league.

Matt, you’re right, you can just start a league with whichever teams want to play, but it would be a pisser to do it knowing it would probably exclude some key people from the last league.

  • having a life other than polo (family, friends, holidays?).

I don't understand this part. Can someone explain it?

  • Me neither! Polo is all of these things to me.

    Family: NE Crew
Friends: South and West polo crews
    Holidays: Rouen, Berlin, etc.
