get clips or clipless, you'll be fine, i haven't heard anyone say "i fell and didn't get time to get my foot out", ever.
Wait, what? Every serious rider I know has stories of how they fell and couldnt get out of the pedals in time.
Around London I ride open, in Dublin I ride clipless or if I'm going on Long rides. Its completely non-essential to ride with clips, clipless, straps, or whatever but they do make a HUGE difference.
Peace

I'm gonna go with the general consensus. I have some straps on the ready, I'll put them on tomorrow and have a go.
I'll probably ride around the outside of regents park to get some practice cos it's nice and quiet. I'd hate to get into bother on the busy roads i commute on, namely Picadilly and Park lane... doesn't bear thinking about..
cheers for the friendly advice chaps..

I was actually surprised how quickly I got used to riding fixed - I only made the transition about 3 weeks ago, but within 3 short rides it pretty much felt completely natural. I love the control at slow speeds, I'm really going to miss that when I next get on a freewheel bike...

Took me about 20 minutes to grasp fixed gear, then an hour or so to get into clips. Have faith, brother. We all took the oath!

If you don't have strap, just don't go too fast, otherwise it be diffcuit to keep your feet on the pedal while spinning.

Yo Dylan, I just put my 1st Fixed together tonight and been riding around getting used to it.
Been riding clipless forever so went straight into it, actually helps when my brain says 'freewheel' coz it pulls your feet round.
I'm going for another 'getting used to' ride tomorrow before I ride down to Hearne Hill on Sunday, so if you want to meet and do a few laps of the park let me know. -

when i first learnt i went open, got a bit cocky and tried to drop the hammer, and ripped my shins to shreds then hit the pavement
Its a false idea of safety, though you can ride fixed open, your control level is wank
Time Atacs FTW!

FUN FUN FUN FUN!!! Just been bombing all over the hills in hampstead! Was a bit wary to start with but now I got my chain tension perfect, what a fucking laugh! A freewheel is fasted downhill, but my fixed is way faster up! Go figure!
Anyway Dylan, hope you had as much fun as I did!

i'm finding the same thing ! my bike seems to 'go' better, might be that my previous hub had pitted bearing races, but nontheless it's all gravy.
my feet fell off the pedals several times on the way back past Picadilly and Edgware road, people must think im a right berk riding with my knees in my chest haha... it's a fucking laugh innit... learning this malarkey..
oh and also, pedal struck big time squeezing through a gap and a pavement...
i'm learning quick, far more fun than i thought !
[edit]
gonna try straps in a min around Regents .... wish me luck ! :D

Get those feet strapped in bro! Makes so much more sence, pluss you can pull up on the peadal strokes!
U coming to the track tomorrow??

don´t go too fast as well!
incidentally I decided to pop round to Condor (seeing it´s only across the road to my girlfriend´s flat) and brought an NJS cage and basic leather strap.

and brought an NJS cage and basic leather strap.
what goes in the NJS cage? an NJS parrot?
I dread to think what you use the basic leather strap for..

NJS Bondage?? hahaha!

man i just tried these straps and they'll be in the classifieds by tomorrow.
Spent most of my time trying to get my feet in whilst the cages scraped on the floor.... far too precarious and dangerous... didn't like em one bit.
I tried stopping and starting for an hour or so.... nah, just don't like the idea of being 'strapped in', gives me the heebie jeebies.
sooo, it's gotta be spd, time atacs or some clipless derivative of some sort.
DONUT!
U coming to the track tomorrow??i have a fully mudguarded converted touring bike.. i'd look a right tit !

Just sorted my bike out to go fixed and went for my 1st time fixed ride.
Passing through St Johns Wood (nice quiet streets) i probably looked like a right tit as the bike buckarooed me everytime i tried to stop. I automatically forget the absence of freewheel...
Have to say tho, after 15 mins, i kinda got used to it and i'm enjoying it cos you have to think in "circles" with your legs always.
I'm riding open pedal at the mo (is that good thing ?)as i'm a bit scared that i won't be able to get my feet off in time cos i'm not used to it.
Anyway, just wanted to share my enthusiasm for the "fixed way" and i think i will take it very slowly untill i get used to it.
peace out!
Congrats on going fixed, I haven't made the transition to clipless or straps yet but I'm sure I will at some point. maybe I am missing out on something. Just feel uncomfortable with the idea of being strapped to a bike. But then 3 months ago I felt that about riding fixed and now it seems so natural.

Gotta say, man, that you'll not really be in control if your feet aren't strapped in. You should give Power Grips a try. Spazzy logo, but I like them, and your feet go in and out easily.
My first time riding fixed was fine until I needed to fart. I stood up on the bike and my brain just went weird and couldn't get to grips without the freewheel. One week and you'll be fine though (strapped in, that is).
Yeah farting takes some practice on a fixed, freewheel is defo better for ripping 'em out.

does spd designed shoes fit the time atacs' cleats ?
-
• #50
Dylan, most shoes designed to be used with clipless pedals have similar/universal fittings.
I ride spd's with Sidi Dominator shoes, a little pricey but well worth it. Just make sure the shoe has a strong solid base.Plenty of people on here ride Atacs so someone will know, or try searching!
And ride down on your fixed, gonna be a sweet day out!
And P!mp . . .get your feet strapped in!! ;)
