  • don't let my shop manager hear that...
my last bike had rival. dropped it to get the campy record 10 read and shifters with chorus front. this season i think i'm going to sell the record 10, and get a whole super groupo. i can't stand ultegra, though it i found performed better than the rival. i found red to kill dura ace though. i like record over red just because the levers felt better. =/

It's the shape of the old DA (and new Campag) hoods that kill me. So uncomfortable when not on the drops. The new DA hoods are much shallower and everything I've heard about the grouppo has been really good. If I was ever to change from the SRAM Red it would be on to the new DA.

Anyone thinking about buying Red should note the following:

    • The red-dome cassette is absolutely crucial for the buttery shifting. I went for the cheaper Force one and ended up having to swap it out.
    • The brake pads are dog wank on carbon rims and will need changing for something carbon friendly.
    • The gear cables are well stretchy. I had to readjust both mechs after a week and then again after a month.
  • So far as I know there are no immediate plans by C. to market electronic. It would make sense to wait as they've only just launched the 11 speed.

  • I had a dream last night that I could freewheel on my fixed. dream analyst verdict?

Stelle did you have a happy childhood?

You're clearly a very confused soul! Do you also dream of Brokeback Mountain style scenarios?

  • A few weeks ago, after a hastily fixed puncture, I suddenly discovered myself freewheeling down a hill. The lack of pressure from my pedals meant that I stopped spinning and it took a couple of nanoseconds to realise that my chain had come off. Luckily I ride with brakes. I stopped, put the chain back on and ensured that there was proper tension and then cycled off to puncture again a mile or so later. This time I was more careful. That said, I arrived home late as a result of two punctures and a lost chain, had to jump into my car to deliver a daughter, and promptly reversed into a neighbour's car. Not a good day.

You should be wary to concentrate more on your next ride.. or bucking bronco you will become. ;)

stelle is a very charming young lady and almost certainly does not dream of herding sheep.

    Shouldn't you be suing someone?

  • On the general ubject of gears though I just spent 2 weeks experiencing my first mountain biking in South Africa...A-MA-ZING!!! After all that spinning up hills etc my first fixed ride yesterday seemed like VERY hard work.

  • Do you also dream of Brokeback Mountain style scenarios?

    As often as I can.

  • Does Matt know?

  • um, he never mentioned the stetson as being a problem, no...

Dude, it's Christmas, have a heart. Besides I'll wait until the New Year when they're really miserable (mwah ha haa haaaaa!)

Stelle, sorry re the gender misreference, perhaps I'm now the one who's getting a bit confused

  • hey, it's ok - it's the internet!

and thanks for the charming comment, I'm touched

Didn't your wife deliver your daughter?

I had a charmless little oik wait until 3:55 pm on Christmas Eve before serving something on us. I had to smile because I have done the same many times over the years. I was also expecting the move and so ready and able to deal with it.

2009 promises to be a good year for suing. Enjoy!

  • Didn't your wife deliver your daughter?

That was 18 years ago. Ever since, it's been down to me.

My big mistake has been to be tee total but married to a woman with a copious appetite for alcohol. I drive. I deliver.

  • He, that's quite fun. I started the same thread in the Austrian Forum just two weeks before.

I even purchased a OCLV-Trek with a rear 440-Zipp for 300€ and assembled it with the all white Suntour/Sugino/Modolo-group I once removed from a car crashed Bottechia for exactly this occasion.
The AccuShift-friction mode helped me over my shifting-horror.

Please do remunerate the great rear fender.

  • never mind shifting horror, what about braking horror?! amazing, mental, I don't understand the bike but I love it. kinda.

  • Please do remunerate the great rear fender.

Please do remunerate the great re-offender? Well, if you say so.

  • Think 2009 will be the year of retro bikes, some manufacturers like kona have already started bringing out road bikes with down tube gear levers, hopefully others will follow

    Why? What's good about them?

For me its about simplicity, you don't always need combined gear/brake levers, carbon wheels etc. Ok, sometimes its nice to have them, especially if you're racing but if not...

Think what i really want is a superlight steel frame and light/strong wheels, like this in the 'spotted section'
