Hell yeah, when that thing starts up, itll either be the cause of the end of the world, or cause leaps and bounds in science.

    Exciting times.

  • A friend of mine is a "Trigger", which means her role is to fire up one of the segments when it goes live. If it all goes wrong, it's her fault I'm sure.

  • its gone live already right?
i thought it was a couple of weeks ago?

  • people in my lab visit the big particle collider in grenoble for experiments sometimes.

  • its been firing beams since 2007, but the first collisions are going to occur in September if memory serves me. thats where the fun begins. create mini big bangs and black holes.
    fun fun fun.

  • maybe it has been firing beams and colliding and your memory is fucked because of the hole in the space / time continuum?

  • there's a whole article about it in this weeks new scientist, my other half was ooohing and ahhh-ing over it last night.

  • Maybe I need to don my tinfoil helmet, but I worry about trying to create black holes & mini big bangs. I can all to easily imagine a 'She cannae take it, Cap'n. She's gonna blow' moment occurring.

    And that won't be good.

Damn i hope it's still available. I'll take any excuse to buy newscientist and feel clever.

  • 9 days to go! starts lining bedroom with lead

    ...and kitchen.

I fucking loved New Scientist mag when I was in school..

  • i don't like the sound of this "hardon collider" and its black holes.

The good news is, any black holes it creates won't last long enough to do any damage. And if the fit does hit the shan then none of us will know about it anyway...

  • They might make another big bang and start a new universe!
Seriously though, I just think they should leave this area of science alone- do we really need to know how everthing started? Will it change anything?

It should be he only got it Friday, let me know if you want to read it, my other half subscribes so we have loads of the bloody things around the house.

  • I just think they should leave this area of science alone- do we really need to know how everthing started? Will it change anything?

It will change everything. The collisions, if successful, will fundamentally change our understanding of the composition of the universe, or confirm current models.

...so what bike is that & what is the best ratio for riding round a hadron collider? Looks like a great skiddy surface.

  • one of the main objectives of the LHC is to discover whether on not the Higgs Boson exists. Basically it'll answer the question, of why matter has mass. Try and wrap your head around that, mine's already gone kablooey.

  • A friend of mine is a "Trigger", which means her role is to fire up one of the segments when it goes live.

    "Trigger" trans "Fluffer"

  • Protons will be traveling around the entire 27km of that ring 11,245 times every second.

    ^ He's racing them

  • This still terrifies me regardless of how much I read about how unlikely anything really bad is going to happen.

  • There was an article a while back with the headline 'Firing of the Hadron Collider probably won't cause the end of the universe'.

    Hilarious.

  • Chickens.
If any hadrons give any of my mates grief I'll headbutt those quark fuckers back to the black hole from where they came! Who are ya?! :)
