Not only is the effective speed of car travel in urban areas lower than we may have thought, we now have to travel further to get to destinations because of the impact of the car.

and cope with a huge physical change to the landscape in the shape of enormo-retail parks, out of town hypermarkets, cinema megaplexes outside the town bypass. etc. all well and good if you do drive a car, all shit and offensive if you don't.

yep, the world is going to shit.

we're (us on this forum, cycling people) a minority with very little power to do anything about the way things have gone/will go

Cycling figures have been going nuts here (and probably back home) but it's going to take a long time (if ever) before we out number cars. Too many people are too lazy to consider alternatives to the car.

This is the same feelings drivers get.. I'd rather everyone was in control of 10kg of steel than 1000kg.
