    that actually happen to me a fuckload of them when I cycle down the Kingsway road near Holborn, the road are a piece of shit there.

  • get yourslef on an ergo with low resistance. spin like your life depends on it. now figure out how to stop the bouncing. easier and safer than doing it on the road.

  • Could also be tyre pressure - try fiddling with that a bit too and see how you go.

    I took the advice of quickly lifting the legs seemed to work well, also the advice of slighty lowering the saddle help.

    thought it didn't stop when I drop down to the drop bar instead of the top to sprint faster against the wind.

    I'll concur, I used to ride on 16-52 for 8 months, and then 16-46 for 4 months.

    now got a bike with 19-48, incredibly spinning (and incredibly easy to skid), but after about, 3 weeks in I got used to it.

    Tis a Langster - based on a deal I got from the bike shop. Though searching the old threads on here did help ;-). I'm sticking with SS for a while before I go fixed.

    Assuming the bike is set up ok how long do you reckon it would take to develop a reasonably proper pedaling technique? Being a lanky unfit IT geek doesn't help.

    I shall await my flaming now...

  • SS won't prepare you for how to pedal fixed as they're just plain different.
    Get used to the handling of the bike for a week or so then go fixed and see how you get on.

    Not long, but longer if you don't bite bullet and go fixed...

    Hard to say, but shouldn't really take too long - but you should be riding a gear that allows a cadence of 90 - 100, say 42-18 something around there.

    I don't think being lanky or unfit should make a diff. You will get fit, and as long as you have your pedals and cleats (if you have them) adjusted correctly, your height should not a difference.

    I've got some pedals & cleat to put on when I get back home. I may try fixed somewhere quiet at the weekend.

    Only ridden near the hotel I stay in for work, near Leeds: hilly as feck. Should be easier back home,Portsmouth: flat.

    So fixed sooner rather than later? I seem to remember reading something on Sheldon Brown about starting fixed being better that starting SS?

    Ditto.. why bother with SS if you will be fixed soon enough, just go for it!

    I have already (a few years ago) done the failed to unclip, oh bollocks I'm lying in the road thing. I'm a bit concerned that not being able to freewheel will result in pedal mashing shins issues.

    Start with loose cleats going slowly in a Tesco car park on or grass.

    If you've got used to unclipping over the years you really should be fine.

  • yeah, straight to fixed. you've gotta jump in the water at some point, better get wet all at once rather than feet, balls, gut, etc etc.

    As for not being used to spinning, just lower your ratio, and get used to it. Since riding the Polo bike at 42:20, i've got used to spinning loads, and on the normal bike and can go as fast as i used to, but on a lower gear.
