Long lasting, skid resistent tyres?

  • [*]there's a big difference between 23c and 25c

Touring tyres in 23c can >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

28c is usually the magic size as it give you enough purchase to grip while skidding, and usually have enough rubber to last a decent number of time.

When a tyres get smaller, it limited the amount of rubber it can hold, and the internal would be very small if the company decided that the rubber should be as thick as it's 28c version.

  • I think it's more of a fixie skidder specific tyre... also the problem was that a 25 was much tighter than a 23 (as far as I can remember), I bought bigger for the reason you mention.

  • Been having some rather amusing skids with my 23c Everwear, riding in the pouring rain\melted snow, it grips so little i can sort of back pedal almost like with a freewheel while locking up a skid for like 20/30 metres, while sitting down!

Sure living up to the name, wish it would wear out so i could replace it already.

  • Finally worn out my Everwear! this lasted at least 6 months of regular skidding, hardly been gentle on the tyre, as i never liked the feel of it so i wanted to replace it, grip is stupidly bad in the wet, especially brand new, but still very impressed with how long it lasted, dose exactly as the name says

but 2 days ago i saw about an inch of the canvas in one spot, then the next day after only like 5 miles it looked like this, when its finally goes, it goes with a bag, literally.

  • I did last years DD on a Re-Fuse that looked like that from the beginning of the ride. I didn't have another tyre to replace with on the day as I was waiting for the delivery of ones I'd ordered. Anyway, 100 odd miles riding fixed on it with a bit of skidding in Suffolk at dawn and it still didn't pop throughout the whole ride. In fact, I rode for another week on it before I decided enough is enough and put a fresh skin on.

    Tl;dr, CSB, Re-Fuse FTW.

  • Yeah it seems the Everwear only has like 2 maybe 3 layers of canvas, and as you can see, they wear down quickly.

i rode a Rando with loads of canvas showing for well over a month

  • Anyone have a gatorskin or any other conti tyre knocking around they wanna sell for a few bob? (not going to be used for skidding)

  • panaracer pasela TGs any good for skidding? Fancy some tan walls

  • I think they hold relatively well. I've got those in 25mm in my low and 35mm in my gangsta. Kind of slippery and predictable wear without pieces ripping.

Ive never had gatorskin hardshell though, but definitely paselas are the best skidding tire with tanwall (or maybe blb black mamba, havent tried)

  • Black mambas aren't worth the trouble.

Anyone riding fixed with bigger tyres should give the Vittoria Rando trails a try.
Only £10 a pop from Planet X and with Sam rubber as a Rando but with about 30% more of it they're a winner.

  • panaracer pasela TGs any good for skidding? Fancy some tan walls

They are okay, decent grip and easy enough to skid, but the rubber starts to rip off when the canvas starts to show, which dosn't take long.

Hardshells last a lot longer and hold up much better

  • How long does a TG last though?

  • Black mambas aren't worth the trouble.

    Must spread rep

  • I can't stress it enough, I had to use a dremel cutting wheel to take it off a rim after half of the sidewall perished and pulled away from the rails.

I will admit the rim was tight but still for a tyre under 6 months old that's really not acceptable.

  • they're shit to get on, ride like shit and shit to get off

  • No different to standard randos ;-)

  • Exactly, the skid resistance is not worth the sacrifice in ride quality or ease of use.

The skid resistance is only marginally better than a gatorskin hardshell, if anyone out there notices that they're burning through those they should look at a ratio with more skid patches or how much they're skidding.

  • No different to standard randos ;-)

    Not true at all.

  • I can't remember how long it took but I killed a Pasela quite quickly on a bike with a brake. I think a Michelin Dynamic Classic has lasted almost as well, might be difference in how I ride the bikes tho...

They'll definitely hold up longer than other gumwalls but I'm not sure it's long enough. I don't like skidding on them either, always felt really slippery and like it was just sliding without slowing me down even with my weight back.

  • My hardshell punctured on the way through Chelsea today when a piece about 6mm long came out of it as I skidded. Shame because up until now it has been my favourite tyre

  • Not true at all.

In my experience, standard randos were also an utter thumb raper to get on, shit and slow to ride and an absolute cunt to get off.

  • Randos are a pleasure to get on in comparison

  • Yeah I managed to get a couple of randos on with my thumbs but resorted to levers and then spoons when those snapped fairly quickly with black mambas.

  • How long does a TG last though?

Few months i guess, if your gentle.

  • What's the fastest rolling skid resistant tyre you guys have found?
