    No. I only ride fixed now. My freewheel broke, I flipped the wheel to use the fixed cog, and never flipped it back over again, nor replaced the broken freewheel. Fixed only since then, and its been quite a while.

  • So do people rate the the Re-fuses because you can wear them right down to the mesh without them puncturing? I don't skid that much (front brake) and have plenty of skidz patches but the one I had on the back seemed to get really ragged quite quickly, to the point where I wasn't comfortable using it on my commuting bike. Swapped it for a Randonneur which is definitely less nippy but seems to be lasting much better.

  • Not in my experience- I find the ReFuse to be really nice up to a point, then they go off really really fast- from "fine" to "bin" in a couple of rides, once they are beyond a certain point they seem to throw big patches of tread off.

  • Any experience with the 24c halo twin rails? I can barely fit anything over a 23 so these sounded like a good option. I'll admit its also because they do the skin wall version....

    That's because they are the best for skidding/riding brakeless. The only way they could possibly be better is if they weighed less. But they're too heavy anyway.

    the 23c weighs almost exactly half that of a 28c rando - will do me.

    to be honest I couldn't say. I've only ever used the 25 hardshell.

  • I just got 23s as I picked a pair up cheap on here. When I'm done with them will probably get a 25.

    Kirkov they're definitely worth a look, I abuse my tyres, and have actually been amazed by these!

    I had one for a week and went through it. Now I always get Soma Everwear. They are a bit pricey but I get about 4 months out of them, so I feel like they are worth the extra dorrah.

  • if you wish to ride like a rampant fixie skidder then no tyre is going to last very long

    if you use leg braking rather than doucheclamation points to slow down tyres should last a decent while

    i tend to use michelin pro race 3 tyres, and move tyres from the road bike to the fixie skidder every frew months.

    lots of skid patches helps, prime number chain ring and sprocket can increase the number of patches.

    i tend to find once a tyre has enough gouges it allows water ingress which then causes delamination - i assume the water forces this to happen as the wheel rotates

    as such once a tyre gets to a certain point they just seem to spontaneously destruct

    i have a maxxis refuse on the front of my fixie skid bike and it has been good for ages, but is now shredded by the crap on londons roads and is the rubber is starting to lift up. if it were on the rear it would just peel of like a banana if i were to skid with it

  • ^that's a good point actually. I had a Refuse start to peel like a banana within the first day of ownership. I glued up the tear and put it on the front and it was fine. There are much better front tyres though.

    not a mad fixie skidder, do use a front brake..

  • fatbirds are doing hardshells for 20 something quid.

    It's what I'd get, so far had about 3 randos worth out of this one and still going strong.

    Did Schwalbe take the Skids back to the drawing board and get them right?

    Also if I might contribute something useful I'd suggest that Continental 4 Seasons are NOT in any way shape or form remotely suitable for skidding. Have a pair on my 3-speed coaster and one hard skid with a front brake assisting after some muppet pulled out on me left a 5 inch strip along the rear tyre in total tatters.

  • I've used an Ultremo on the front for quite a while now. I love how they handle and never had a puncture but some people find they get punctures a lot with them. You need a very grippy tyre on the front, not that hardshells are bad, but you can get a lighter/grippier one.

  • I use a conti utlra on the front, because I had one kicking about. It's been fine really, balance between comfort and speed. Never had a puncture in many many miles. I'm sure there are better tyres for the job, but ultras are cheap, and i also quite like having conti front and rear.

    About to do that, this happened http://www.lfgss.com/thread86422.html , so i need a new front but can't afford one. got a couple of 2/3 worn ultra sports knocking about in the yard, hoping the combo works ok. ran ultras on my geared bike for a while, fairly puncture resistant. now i've got ultremo zx's on it and it feels like a fucking rocketship.
