Police spotting (junction watch)

  • **Technically, when the light is red you’re not allowed to cross the first line on your bike – you have to enter into the ASZ via the cycle lane (generally in the left corner of the box). So technically you’ll commit an offence if you come into the box on red from anywhere else. **But it seems unlikely that the police would bother to enforce this.
As before, what’s prohibited is crossing the line on red. If a car driver or motorbiker has already crossed the first line by the time the light goes red, they won’t commit an offence so long as they stop at the second line. This is why cars and motorbikes can, in some circumstances, stop lawfully in the boxes. It’s also why keeping cars and motorbikes out of the boxes is difficult for the police, who need to see when they enter the box in order to judge whether an offence has been committed.
Of course ASZs would work much better with better enforcement (perhaps by camera) to keep cars and motorbikes out. It might also help if the rule requiring cyclists to enter via the cycle lane was changed to reflect the reality of how the boxes are used.

    Corporate manslaughter, surely??

  • I never thought i would hear you arguing being sensible in regards to the police chung!

    Quoted for posterity

  • ^^that rule is changing multi grooves. bigger asl's would be good

  • So I recorded my commute in and out today, since there's been all this fuss. It's not hugely exciting but the idea was to capture normality not extraordinary occasions. Nevertheless it does demonstrate a good few examples of terrible road safety decision by various parties - cycles, police, cars, etc.

@ ~ 5:00 I speak to some police at a junction on CS2 at Aldgate about why they aren't enforcing the ASL violations happening right there. They were nice, I'll admit, but probably due to bad instructions from above, were definitely going along the "wear a helmet and high-viz and everything will be fine" route, despite me pointing out to them 3 identical contraventions in 30 seconds...

  • Nice vid... I had a Hasty Porsche Guy on my ride in this morning, buzzed me twice in the space of quarter of a mile on The Highway...

TBF He was draughting the taxi that had just done exactly the same thing on both occasions... I wouldn't mind but I was riding primary so pretty scary on a fast road...

    Meh...

  • 5 pigs surrounding a scared looking lady rider on the traffic island outside brixton cop shop on being told there's loads of cunts on their phones they'd do well to be having words with: "Mind your own business".

little men in uniform. the same the world over.

  • ^^^You're a pretty fast. 6:24 there and back, no RLJ and a chat with the old bill. Would take me an hour.

  • Never mind riding fast, you finish nice and early - it's still light on the way home. Any jobs going at your place?

  • I'm going to get one of those hi vis jackets that almost looks like a police jacket and stand around correcting the real police's shitty advice.

    shinkuu kiss spotted this morning

Slightly cheating, I'm a student and bored of pharmacology lectures (unsurprisingly) before the end. I'm sure you're welcome to apply though - only 6 years of study and a ruined NHS to look forward to afterwards (!)

  • no RLJ .

Not that I normally would, but, it was still an effort to try to keep my riding unimpeachable. As far as I can tell the only naughty things I did on camera were riding into the ASL from the right a couple of times, and I undertook 2 buses at the Blind Beggar (but I knew the light would be red for a while).

Gonna get an FPN in the post aren't I.

  • I told about 5 people in Shepherds Bush their lights weren't working - either they didn't have any or they were almost flat battery.

We stopped at the lights and one bloke who was covered up asked what I said. I pointed at the 10 or so coppers all stood around Shebu Green and said "they're out busting people with no lights and shit, you might wanna get some lights"

  • Speaking of this "joining the ASL from the bike lane/left". I noticed today on the way in that the one at the lights by the BP garage on Camberwell Road, northbound, there is no access point. The first line is solid and straight all the way to the double yellows. What the fuck are you supposed to do then?

  • I am tubing today as I 've to go out after work but saw a BMX rider pulled over on regent st by cops and BBC shooting the whole thing not sure what to make of it

    Stay behind the line.

    Forever.

  • I spoke to a superintendent this morning at the junction of The Cut and the road that heads north on to Blackfriars and he told me they were there to protect cyclists but couldn't believe the poor standard of cycling and the danger cyclists out themselves in. I couldn't really disagree. They were enforcing the asl rules for drivers though which was good to see.

  • Already a noticeable drop off in numbers of coppers at the junctions I go through. And those left look even more uninterested.

  • There were loads at Shebu again this morning. None at Regents though.

  • Stay behind the line.

    Forever.

I'm there. Busting for a wee.

  • On my 10 mile commute they were present at one junction- that outside Oval tube, where they told a lady off for not having a front light and stopping well beyond the line.

  • I finally got to commute in to town, and after reading this thread the last few days was expecting plenty of lovely people to talk to at the lights. Saw none :(

  • Police had a word with driver stopped in ASL at the bottom of Parkway, Camden, nice to see as they didn't say anything to me about being over the line

  • Stopped by community services officer on Hampstead Rd - he was doing a 'Survey' on why I wasn't wearing a helmet.

I was unaware that the number of cyclists dying in the last week was due to to them throwing themselves under vehicles on purpose.

you didn't try hard enough . you're fast enough. you could have ridden to all the junction hotspots till you found someone to talk to and still be on time for work. clearly you don't like a challenge :)

  • slept through alarm, woke up at 8:50 giving me 40 minutes to get to the relevant desk. No time to find the quality conversation today. Maybe Friday.
