• Anyone have any experience from this jacket? Thinking about getting one to use as a every day rain jacket, and for cycling of course.

any thought's on it? Is it really waterproof? Breathable?

  • I am very tempted with this one, also gore-tex paclite

  • I got this jacket from NorthFace and I am pretty pleased. Wore it yesterday in the rain for 3 hours and it held well. (shame the rest of me was soaked through)

  • Gore-Tex paclite is a very good fabric. But if it's mainly for wearing on a bike then would recommend going bike specific. Especially as it will have a longer scooped hem at the back. For better coverage when you're cycling. Have a look at Gore's own bike wear as well.

First North Face one is pretty good, and not bad value for money. Second Alp one from Wiggle is obviously focused on cyclists and looks pretty good. And with our Northern European summer doing a fine impression of last year, a waterproof jacket is a sound investment!?

good points, think it'll be used for more other things than cycling though, not sure a cycling jacket would be very good on a boat?

it would if it was a pedalo ;)

  • GoreTex sucks for bike use, even packlite and XCR. They just dont breathe quite enough. I use a Rab latok alpine jacket, which is designed for like crazy minimalist lightweight climbing. Its made from e-vent which is fully waterproof, breathable and weighs scratch all. plus because its designed for mountaineering, you can fit your head + a bike helmet inside the hood!!

  • Arc'teryx use Gore fabrics, and then tend to have quite a good name for mountaineering clobber. If you don't like paclite, try Gore 3L Pro

  • I had a berghaus packlite and it lasted about a year of cycling before it started leaking - wasn't that impressed really - in it's defence - I was wearing a rucksack, and presumably the rubbing this is what caused the leaks - but who desn't have a bag when cycling?

  • rubbing shouldn't cause this issue within a year. did you wash it as normal, with detergent? as this is usually the main cause of failure. as it breaks the waterproof membrane down.

    I never washed it.

  • That's me told then :) I'd send it back to Beghaus if you've still got it.

Had a pair of North Face (non Gore, their cheap asian fabric) pants fail on me yesterday. When it was absolutely pissing it down. Will be off to the store today.

reckon it was a bad example or bad material? Been thinking of getting one of their cheaper jacket, but doubt the material will stand up for any proper weather

  • eVent is the most breathable fabric on the market. and yes its fully waterproof too. goretex have had it sewn up for so many years people think its the standard to compare by. personally, next time i buy i jacket, its gonna be eVent. fed up of getting wet from the inside cos goretex doesnt breathe properly. endura do an event jacket. the neck is wide but i could live with it. montane do do but got a hood. similar to the rab above. oh and event is more rugged than paclite, resistant to abrasion etc so bag issues should be no issue. though it is slightly heavier and less pacable than paclite.
