What Tubes ?

  • Speaking to Pj the other day, he mentioned that my bike, a converted Dawes Super Galaxy, has Reynolds tubing, which is nice to hear, cos i know Reynolds tubing is highly regarded.

The thing is, no where can i find what tubing this is. Is it 631,853, 531......

Is there a way i can figure this out ?

It just I'd like to know, outta curiosity, if ya get me.

And another thing, my bike does seem to have lugs, but they are very shallow.
Does that mean it was TIG welded ? or could it be brazed.

P.s the bike is around 10 years old give or take...

  • pic?

  • picture is the best way my friend. How heavy is it? next time you're at a social, you could try comparing the weight of yours with a similar known 531 conversion (pajamas' would be pefect because his is a 531 dawes), but that would obviously be largely down to guesswork.

you could take the forks off and see if there's a reynolds stamp on em, that's how i ID'd a totally unmarked track-path frame. It had, faintly, reynolds 531 double butted blah blah inscribed on the steerer. You could then hazard a guess that the frame is also 531. But it might not be even then.

lugs are fairly shallow. If it has them i doubt it has been welded.

  • dawes super galaxy should be 531 / 531ST (Special Touring)

  • Here's a picture with the Reynolds Sticker highlighted.

I'm going to give that a go tomorrow.

    Cheers for the help.

  • i think 531 if it is reynolds...

  • I've contacted Dawes already but they couldn't say, even though i gave them the serial number.
I guess It's a bit of an effort on their behalf to ID a bike.

  • those dawes tourers are super comfortable

  • Ye, i have to say i love my Dawes, i intend on keeping it for a long time.
Very comfy, not the lightest but you just know it's made to last.
Only paid £50 for it lol. Bargain me thinks.
Would be nice when I'm old and wrinkly to have had the same bike.
You hear stories of people having the same Brooks saddles for decades on the bikes they ride.
That's kinda why I properly want to know what the bike is, tubewise.

I have another bike, a Rock Lobster, dunno if you know it ?
It's made by a renowned bike frame builder in the MTB world. I intend on keeping that too :)
But i don't have it in London. I think it would be thief fodder. Ooo what a ghastly thought.
