Jol I'm on this as well but not met you yet. shouted at the Nocturn though.
@ Aroogah. Bud I'm doing this with a group of work mates (day after the dreaming spires) hope I survive #1 and to catch up for a beer in Brighton.I think I'm doing the dreaming spires as well and I'm also doing the L2B with work people. We'll catch up on Saturday

Me and my friend did it backwards last saturday. I did it with gears and he did it on 46x16 fixed. We're riding this weekend and he's decided to flip his flip flop hub to get some relief on the downhills. Don't know if it will matter though from what I've heard about the number of people clogging the road.
I reckon the best advice is a lower gear maybe 46x18 or something, just because everyone will be crawling up the hills and getting in the way.
I'm leaving at 9.30 though so who knows.
Has anyone decided if they're stopping anywhere partivular for drinks yet?

the sidewinder is probaly the easiest to find from the official finish... it's here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=BN2%201JN
the finish line is basicaly where on the gmap the a259 label is.That sound cool for people? I'll be wearing an lfgss airfix tee so should be easy to spot?

Weather does not look promising! http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=1222
The sidewinder is pretty easy for the end of the route. But I'd say we should go 50m up the road to the Hand in Hand. They have lager from German brewers, worth the extra distance.
Kelvin, I'm thinking that I'm going to start out from Brighton Sunday morning, cycle up and meet the ride somewhere.

i dont trust the bbc anymore, they change their mind every bloody minute
the fact that its going to be cooler on sunday is probably a good thing. Weather was ideal last year, cool over cast, one shower at Turners hill, then bright sunshine by the time we got to ditchling. -
• #33
you're right, the Beeb are pretty changeable on the old weather front. fingers crossed it'll be fine.

• #34
So is it the Hand in Hand or the Sidewinder?

Aroogah I have your digits and will give you a bell for pub fun, you'll probably beat me geared even tho my start time is 6am! :-)
-
• #36
FYI - Geared does NOT equal faster in my case :-)

I'm not hedging my bets, first time I've done it fixed and i'm a little nervous.
Still if all else fails I will be doing my bit for HHSC (Hip Hop Slave Crashing) I think I may actually clean the bike for Sunday. -

im doin it on sunday on a ss 48/16 dunno how that will fair with the hills!!
first time i have done the l2b!
start time of 6-30am so hope its not too crowded! but not looking forward to the early start as i live in brighton!!!!!
do people think i should change back to my 48/18 or stick to 48/16????? advise would be great

Paul, I'd def stick the 18 on the back. For hills like the beacon and turners you'll need it. Over the course of 60 miles it's better to have more a spinny gear. Help to prevent cramping up and gives you a breather if you want to slow up for a bit.
Having said that I know some peeps of here got up up the beacon on 48/16 but I wouldn't be able to in a million years.
On the pub front, the sidey and the hand in hand are in sight of each other. You see bikes, that's where people are. PM me or kelvin if anyone wants mobiles.

I'll be doing it on 42/15 which should be interesting - am tempted to change back to my 16 cog for this, but then thought I'd HTFU and i'd rather be a little less spinny on the downhills..

I'll be running about 68GI. What does your work out at Clefty?
-

Will I be put in the stocks and pelted with rotting vegetables if I turn up on my road bike?
I'm starting at half eight, but our elite peleton comprises of myself (the poster child for beer+fags+sofa life) and a bunch of Kiwi's who are doing it on MTB's as "road bikes are for gayers", so I have no idea when we will make it to Brighton.
In my defense my fixed gear got nicked, and I have not got it's replacement sorted yet.

75GI, hence why i was thinking maybe putting the 16 back on which will give me 70.9
I think i'm more worried about the downhill spinning than uphill tho - as I can always just get off and walk! so will stick with the 15, also the fact i dont have a chainwhip to change it doesnt help.

i did it on mine.. 15 a few weeks ago but free-ed up the back wheel cos the downhills are MASSSSSSIVE and reallly really fun.. best bit really.
i'm meant to be on it too this sunday but havent arranged gettin my bike home and have no cash.. anyone got any bright ideas? room on bike racks? its all starting to be a bit of a hassssel!
-
• #48
clefty i was thinking the same i can always walk hills and from what i have been told most people do so makes riding them harder so there for i think sticking with my 16 is better so i can then at least spin down the hills and on the flats with out my legs spinning to fast!

Gears are fine. I'm doing the ride geared and doing the forum ride the day before on gears. It's all about the riding.
Now if they were to pelt us with fresh bananas then that would be useful
