  • GA2G, after all that has been said and explain, I dont understand how you can still thinking the way you do.

  • I think 'mixed surface' needs to be explained as that was only brought in a few posts ago. Until then we were talking about hard road surfaces (bumpy, potholed etc, but still on the road)

What is a mixed surface, are you talking about off road?

  • I contend that treaded/dimpled tyres have an advantage on mixed surfaces and in mixed conditions, more than slicks. I completely agree that in consistent conditions and on a non-varying surface, slicks have the overwhelming advantage. Obviously.

  • Hahaha!

  • If you read my posts, which I won't edit, you'll see there's no u-turn.

  • Ffs Joe, piss off back to the football or something......

    ;)

    Fncking Millwall supporter.

  • Hohoho!

  • @rik.....Please re-read my post #690. Clearly no change.

  • Is anyone running the 28c gatorskins?
Or knows the overall diameter to outside of tyre when inflated?
I'm wanting to check i have enough clearance before i buy one, currently with a 23c on, its 4.5mm from the seat tube. Is it as simple as is should be (ie 28c is 5mm bigger than a 23c)?

  • It is never simple with Continental as their sizes are always way out. They are smaller than advertised, presumably to make the weight look lower for given size. So if you have a 23c Gatorskin then it may be about right to add 5mm but if you are using say a Panaracer tyre then your 23c might be almost as big as Continentals 28c !

  • So continentals are smaller... I always thought they were wider?

  • Not in my experience, Continentals (and some Vittorias) are smaller than stated.

And with bigger sizes it can be a wider gap. A 35c Rando looks tiny compared with a 35c Ribmo for example and the Ribmo is the tyre that is actually 35c when measured.

Should be a trades description issue or something as surely if a specific measurement is stated then the item should be that size shouldn't it?
Wouldn't get away with it for stems, seatposts etc,.

  • OK, so I'm gonna need some tyres for the road bike... Light and puncture resistant 23c... Give it up, roadie douchebags...

  • Maxxis Refuse or Durano plus

  • rubino pro for everyday stuff

  • i just started my field test of conti supersport plus 23c on the back.

after i went through a durano plus in little under 4 weeks (35quid filed away on the streets of londen, thank you very much)
i figured a similar system but half as expensive tyre should perform at least as well.

so far i can say, it feels more rigid than durano and rubino pro, better controllable in the wet and during a skid and makes no skiddy noises (< i like) and for 16,- quid from parker or ribble seems already a winner, if it holds up at least as long as the durano plus.

  • oops, joe i just red, the supersport plusses are not particularly light. for that, you might want to look into foldable gatorskins, gp4000 or rubino pros. the latter feels more puncture proof but i love the gp4000 in the front. it is very light and reasonable puncture resistant, but compaired to a rubino pro preferred for the grip it provides, durable as well.

    690mm.

  • ^ Thanks winjer... but i have that measurement now with the 23c, any chance you could check it again from the centre of the axle to the outside of the tyre, i expect it to be nearer 350mm.

  • rubino pro for everyday stuff

    +1

  • I need smaller tyres.

Some people will know that I crashed the red Quinn a while ago, riding along one minute, then flipped right over the bars the next. Never really sure what happened.

Took the front wheel out yesterday and discovered the paint rubbed completely off the downtube where the tyre has hit it. Unless something stuck to the tyre and filled the gap I'm assuming that a little bit of flex in the fork, combined with the ridiculously close clearances, caused the tyre to meet the tube and jam the front wheel to a stop.

So the tyre was a Maxxis Xenith Hors de Category 23c

Are there smaller diameter tyres. i.e. will a 21c or a 20c actually have a smaller diameter or just be narrower? if the diameter is smaller, what is the smallest 700c that anyone knows of?
I have the original tubulars. Maybe it's worth seeing if they give a little more clearance.

  • A 20c will be smaller as a tyre is pretty much round so if the width goes down then so does the height.

  • I've use Vittoria Diamante 20 and they are definitely lower profile than 23s.

I would first question the use of such a bike on the road, however.
