Cones keep tightening

Posted on
  • Hi,

I have a 1 rear wheel that refuses to stay correctly cup and cone adjusted however tight I set it.

I get it perfect off the bike and make sure the nuts are tight against the cone, however as soon as it goes on the bike it tightens. any ideas ?

Its fine on the singlespeed as I can adjust on the bike as I can see if the wheel is tight on freewheel - but on fixed I can't do that - is there anything I can do ?

    thanks
    Tim

  • are you using 2 spanners to tighten the locknuts? or just doing it with your hands/1 spanner?
and don't tighten it too much! you'll kill your bearings. just enough so that you get rid of the play, but it doesn't feel 'lumpy'.

  • check to see if any of the nuts are cracked.

  • Adjust it so it's not quite tight enough before you put it on the bike. I'm guessing the clamping force from putting the wheel in the frame acts to tighten it a bit.

yeah, this can happen if you have a nutted hollow axle or QR

Sheldon talked about this problem, he set up a rig that meant when he adjusted the cones on a QR axle he clamped a skewer on the axle first and did it pre-compressed, if you know what I mean

yep a slight bend in axle can cause problems too.

    wise words.
that's the kind of thing that will spend hours pissing you off before you work out what it is.

  • finally, slight bend in the dropouts can cause problems too.
    get em checked.
