Copper Bits

  • I have been having a hunt, but what are those copper bits you crimp onto the end of brake cables called, i.e. to stop the internal cable fraying - i.e. NOT the bits you put on the outside of cables to stop the grit getting up them?

  • i thought they were usually steel.
dunno what they're called, but the bike shop'll probably give you some for nowt.

  • They are called crimps although you could call them ferrules, but the word ferrule has been nicked by cable housing stops and caps.

Some people solder the end of the cable, I dip it in a little bit of expoxy.

Alloy ! But I agree I have never seen 'em in copper ?

    +1

If you ask nicely they will give you a few.

  • Expoxy sounds good. Aren't ferrules the bits you stick on the actual pipe?

  • I believe they're called 'crimpy things for the ends of cables to stop them fraying'

  • Solder, epoxy or electronics shrink wrap all work too.

  • crimpity crimpity now now

  • I now see there are plenty on the cycling section of ebay - earch term "crimp" for those who are after some.

A ferrule is any old ring or cap that strengthens a tube or stick or something and prevents it from splitting or wearing.

  • 'Cable tidies' seems to be pretty common parlance.
In my shop we call them CW-Nine-Twenties. It's a technical thing.

  • Halfords sell baggies of them for 99p or something. And tracknuts. Oh yes. Halfords' tracknuts.

  • Aluminium 'cable ends' is the only way this Rubble rider rolls..
