Contis are a bitch to get on because they never have to come off. Right, hippy?......
Tyre levers are the future.

Contis on old mavic rims are a particular pain in the arse! They do go on eventually - usually less than 9 hrs though ;-) Use a lever either side when you get it most of the way on. Slowly edge the lat 25cms on to the rim. When you get to the last 10-15cm use a third tyre lever - or spoon ;-) - to pop over the last section. Works every time for me.

Contis: "square into a round hole".. they are obviously better served as garden edging rather than bicycle tyres.

my battle is with old Campag Lambda rims
will try again on Wednesday, I'll do some weights in the meantime
I wanted them on for a time trial I'm doing on Tuesday evening but I don't want to bugger anything up between now and then so the old ones can stay on for now

the greatest day of my life....
I got the tyre on, just the 3 hours today so 12 in total
I stumbled across some old metal tyre levers from when I was a lad in the shed and they did the job in 10 minutes
I've even put some air in and so far it hasn't gone down, in a while I put the rest in and ride it
The front wheel can wait a while

Well done! You must be particularly pleased with yourself. I hope the front tyre goes on as easily.
A fortnight has gone by between your first post and getting the job done. You'd think that would be some sort of forum record. You'd think...

Three months later and the brake pads still haven't budged. I'm shit. It's official.

premature celebration I'm afraid
thought I'd clean the hub and sprocket while it was off the bike and must have tweaked the cone on the axle so I've spent 5 more hours trying to get the wheel on without the bearing grinding or sideways play, Sheldon assures me a happy medium is possible even though it can involve 1/10 of a turn or less
I even made my own cone wrench about 3pm
If ever they have the most incompetent mechanic award I would be a certainty for it
I'm too knackered to do anymore today, can't wait for tomorrow
