Tesla would have happened without Musk.
Imo the counterfactual argument is stronger the other way.
He was the hypeman who got people to continue sinking money into a loss making company. He's been the figurehead pumping the share price past the point of rationality which has enabled it to do what it's done.
I really can't see how the founders could have done that. And I can't see how Tesla could have dominated the market in the way they have without the hype.

Imo they are different types of credit, and not mutually exclusive.

Cheap lithium batteries, brushless motors and power electronics have taken over pretty much every other sector where they're relevant without needing a Tesla to hype them. I have no reason to think the car industry would have been any different.

Doesn’t Tesla make more money off its carbon offset credits being sold to other carmakers or something similar than the actual terrible quality cars?
When you buy a Tesla in the USA you sign away your rights to a class action with regard to any faults too.

Used to.
I hate Teslas as cars, they’re horridly designed and dreadfully engineered, but they sped up electrification enormously. It would have happened without them, but probably ~10 years later.

But how long before they get Motorola'd?
-
• #808
I’d say it’s likely.
Quality and reliability are major buying hurdles now there is competition. But I think user image could be the downfall, they no longer have the hip early-adopter vibe, they’re no good for the tofu-woke-lib-elite because of Musk and they’re not of a high enough quality or experience to be a statement of wealth like a Range Rover or Audi.
Their share of the EV market is down 15% in the last two years and that’s before the world saw Musk’s full character.

Particularly enjoying the '90s sitcom set he's hired.
It's uncle Phil's court room office, right?

“I’m not mad” he insists, whilst evidently being mad enough to plan and record an entire video.

Or maybe it's a 4D chess marketing move playing to his base.
Or maybe he's a basic prick.

Blimey.
This is like all of the worst WWE promos in history rolled into one horrific ball of mess.

Prius are all over North America in taxi service.
They set the standard for reliable electric under heavy use.
Toyota deserves more credit.
BTW I drive electric forklifts all day. A lot of the tech was developed there. Toyota owns a couple of other forklift manufacturers like BT and Raymond.
