I got some roc's from wiggle for about £45. Fantastic.

I upgraded from Aliums to XS recently and can recommend them.
There is a large price difference, but XS seem to have more float and much less clip/unclip tension. Absolutely no issues so far with the aluminium springs as opposed to the steel on aliums, and i've torqed the tits of them them on hill climbs.... Time will tell though. -

Time! ha! i see what you did there :D
-
• #105
Yeah, thanks, i'm writing that one down.

atac XS are great pedals, one of the main differences seems to be that they unclip less than spd's (though this is a general opinion from users not sure of any empirical data to back it up)
atacs seem to be fairly indestructible, so just buy them where they are cheapes

I called them up after reading your post and they said they were out of Aliums and that they weren't going to stock them anymore. :s I'm gonna call again tomorrow as I'm not convinced the person I spoke to knew what they were talking about. Hmmm...
i bought a pair yesterday and they said that they 2 pairs in stock

Of the 2009 range would people recomend going for the XS over the Aliums, or is it not worth the extra outlay?
-
• #110
If weight isn't really an issue, then the Aliums probably do everything you want just fine. Purist-wise, the bearings / build of the more expensive models will most likely be superior...Aliums aren't recommended for no reason, though!

XS are better to my knees than Aliums were.
They don't have such a positive clip in/out as Aliums... never unclipped accidentally in either though. -

I just got a pair of these through the post today for £30 less than they should be....awesome pedals...seem to guide your shoe onto the pedal so much better than my old atacs....and a big plus point with the new ROC range is that they actually have flats for a pedal spanner too (just noticed the xs carbons did too...must just be my older resin atacs that didn't?)...and adjustable spring tension.
I'd thoroughly recommend the new ROC range over older ones.

Ok, just about to spend some birthday money on pedals- they are going to be Time, but which ones?
Aliums, XS or ROC?
Also- Scott, where did you manage to get such a good deal on the ROC?
-
• #114
I've spend a while reading the whole thing (and other topic) and decided to sink and purchase the Time Atac Roc carbon.
goodbye bank balance, I'll have to wait till I can afford some decent MTB shoes! there's a reason why I ride with clips.

Ed, I suggest getting started off with some cheap shoes first. Then once you get a feel for the Time cleats/pedals and have enough money, step up and buy some Sidi's (or similar).
-
• #116
Probably a good idea, I have my eyes on those Mavic Razor MTB shoes, but the LBS have some nice looking Bontrager MTB shoes that they can shed £20 off it's rrp would be a good start (£40).
-
• #117
Sounds like a good start, as long as they fit you they will do the trick perfectly.
And you never know, you might just end up loving them and not wanting to upgrade to Sidi etc. for a long time..
Mavic Razors are lovely shoes though.

Here's hoping I won't fall over during the first fews week of clipless!
-
• #119
I didn't! Only been riding clipless for under a month and I'm fully used to it now.
Key is to concentrate and remember you are clipless when stopping etc. Won't take long.
Easy shit.

• #120
I really doubt you will ed, before I rode fixed with clips and straps I always fell of my road bike (clipless) on every ride without fail. Now that I'm used to clips and straps riding clipless is totally fine and I haven't had any problems at all.
-
• #121
Oh I'm pretty used to clips, althought the difference is that clips have a very smooth transition from pedal to tarmac, instead of twisting your shoes to get out.
it's just something that take a short while to get used to really.
-
• #122
ed you'll have trouble telling the difference between the best rocs and simple aliums at the beginning so i really wouldn't bother, you'll make your money back on the forum if you sell them on after a few months. Also, atacs only work with Sidi's ;) so you should probably get some of them after a while

never switch from flats to spds (or other clippless) when MTBing, i managed to spend £150 in bent hangars over the period of 6 months before i actually managed to get really good at unclipping my shoe, but imo a road bike is a perfect introduction to clippless! -

flickwg's right - I can't tell any difference in use between the aliums and the 'high end' models, except the aliums feel a little stiffer and more secure. Even I, a fucking weight weenie and honking lunatic, am happy to sacrifice 75g or so, in order to go for the budget option.
And the best/most attractive shoe in the world is fucking useless if the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last"]last[/ame] used doesn't suit the shape of your foot.
I even owned those Mavic Razors, and would've been happy to keep them as a decent mid-range shoe if there hadn't have been a couple of annoying hotspots I couldn't live with - subtle enough not to spot in the shop, but all too noticable after a few hours* in the saddle.
*accumulated, as well as longer rides

not a problem, there's a spes shoes that can able to be use with Atac without difficulties.
