get Dura-ace or the most expensive you can find and you won't go too far wrong, i'd think

the grey stuf is aluminum from your rims. i use dura-ace which are fine but i hear good things about swiss-stop pads. they aren't cheap though.

My rims are melting? Is that normal?
Are these guys the ones you use:

that's how it works
the rim is wearing down, as are the pads.
you can get expensive ceramic rims which last for a very long time and don't leave aluminium dust everywhere

i wonder if the compound is the same in the dura-ace pads as the tiagra?
can't you just replace the rubber insert and not have to buy the whole block? -

Shimano pads are usually rubbish.

On the pads which came with the brake, I think... the whole thing is replaced. The whole unit was pretty cheap so I probably expect this.

fc9k Shimano pads are usually rubbish.
I have heard this before. Is there any other type of pad that fits my brakes? I don't want to buy the wrong thing? -

Kool-Stop Salmon are good - and you can get them in all flavours, campagnolo, shimano, v-brake, BMX caliper..

You can buy the inserts from Wiggle, but you need a pad holder. -

Shimano pads are shit, although the DA ones on my Tarmac are doing quite well, so maybe it's only the Ultegra and below pads that suck?

Water + grit from the roads = grinding paste
Not much you can really do about it.

swiss stop pads are wicked really good braking

MAVIC pads are almost too good. They're so much better than anything else I've had. Even after months I still have to be careful not to squeeze too suddenly as they stop my front wheel dead. No grey splatter ever.

Which Mavic pads? The only ones I know about are the ones for their carbon rims.

The pads which came with my Shimano Tiagra 4500 seem to be melting away (and not really stopping) me in this wet weather. Any recommendations for replacements? Specifically any recommendations from Wiggle as I am about to order some other stuff.
I just want something which won't dissolve and spray horrible Grey stuff all over my bike.
