What the Hell I Did. [Update]

  • So some of you will probably have noticed turd's post a few days ago about my stronglight cranks.

I've been trying to get a hold of an oversized crank extractor to get them off my bike - i popped into london fields, they said they had one but that I couldn't borrow it or use it even if i brought my bike into the shop, which I thought was a little extreme, but fair enough. I rang andy of fixedgearlondon and he said they had but i'd have to wait till the end of the day, and as I sort of needed my bike working to get places I decided to head to brick lane bikes instead.

This was, in retrospect, a very bad idea.

I'd popped into the shop on tuesday evening to ask about the crank extractor, they said almost immediately that they had it. I came in today, the girl on the till seemed to remember that i'd come in, and I restated that they were stronglight cranks and therefore needed an oversized crank puller. Considering that the bike needed a new headset and blb are hardly likely to let me borrow their tools, I just put it in with the promise of getting it back the same day.

Well they got it sorted impressively fast - i got a call about an hour later. But they didn't actually have the right crank extractor, instead they'd ANGLE GROUND my cranks to get them off, WITHOUT calling to ask my permission first!! They had to fish them out of the bin when I asked to have them back!!!

They'd also asked me on the phone if I wanted a smaller sprocket - I thought they meant if I wanted to flip the wheel to my already installed smaller sprocket (the new cranks were 46t while the old ones were 52), in fact they meant did I want to buy a smaller sprocket. I told them to leave it, I'll flip the wheel myself, and when I got there they hadn't even bothered to shorten the chain. All this and they asked for £25 service charge.

They came up with some bad excuses about why they did it, first of all saying they didn;t have the tool, and that the tool is hard to get ahold of, and that the threads were worn (not true). Am I right in thinking that regardless of all those things they should have called me first??

Picture (both sides are the same):

Also there's a nasty knock on the other side of the crank arm, not sure if that was them or me but it looks pretty fresh.

By the way fruitbat, i'll trade you the spider adapter/chainring if you want, i obviously have no use for it anymore. Fucking hell.

  • That's not very good! Did they tell you why they didn't ring?? No wonder more people are going over to Andy's.

  • fucking hell, killing that poor bike!!!

  • well thats pretty piss poor customer service, i've never been there but they sound like a bunch of cowboys, could you imagine if that happened to some full carbon crankset that cost a coupla hundred or more.

  • Well, I'd be billing them for a new set of cranks if I were you.

If they 'didn't have the tool', they shouldn't have accepted the job. What a bunch of fucking cowboys.

  • sorry man, feel for you, i now wont be going there EVER!

  • They charged you £25 to angle grind your cranks off?! thats nuts!

  • i would've left, i wouldv'e put it through the counter. stronglight vintage crankset is £30-40 worth.

  • fuck me sideways, i would demand another crank, tell them you wanted to take the cranks off only to change the b/b, as the cranks were good......wankers!!

  • muppets

  • I can't believe I just paid it and left - I was pretty fucking shocked. I'm really shit and being angry - but I need to go back to inquire about the (perfectly fine) bottom bracket that they didn't give me back anyway. I'm definitely not shopping there again though.

Jon - they tried to tell me that someone had told me that they didn't in fact have the tool - this is total bollocks. What is the chance of me getting a refund? I somehow think slim.

  • Cajeta unbelievable! guess you can buy some more off ebay (grrrrr)

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370027204899&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:uk

    Winning bid: US $200.00

    (approximately £100.31)

they trashed a long-un's worth of crankage without telling you!?

    I'd demand satisfaction

  • holy shit. you definitely need to get them to compensate you for it. they HAVE to notify you/get your approval before doing anything other than the work you specified, and they also are supposed to call you (aka speak to you) before making any major changes to the price. did you see them write the repair ticket?

  • Oh my god I feel sick. $200 for just the arms. I can't believe it

  • i still don't understand why you took it there, seeing about 4 people offered you a crank puller as well!! you've got 3 bikes, why not ride the bianchi???

  • kick up a fuss

    you really should

    that totally not on

no, as long as you get a hold of a repair ticket, or something quoting you a price and saying what was to be done (as you asked them to do it, not as they did it), then you easily have a case with the better business bureau (or whatever you call it over here). usually a threat of that will get them thinking quick.

2 bikes dale including this one - I don't really think that's an issue either - yeah I was being impatient but I gave it in to BLB in confidence that they knew what they were fucking doing.

  • Right well I'm off to print off that Ebay page...

  • That terrible.

You have missed your first and best chance to complain unfortunately. don't worry I have had thing happen too me to which I should of complained but got a bit intimidated / overwhelmed / shocked by the whole situation.

You should still go back and complain. Make sure you know exactly what you are going to say, write a list of the points so you don't get distracted, maybe write down a little speech so you know how you are going to phrase these points. Have a reason ready for why you did not complain when you picked up the bike. Be honest, say you where shocked / intimidated felt bullied whatever the reason may be. Don't be aggressive but be confident, lay on your disappointment as you thought they have a good reputation. Really try not to yell or get aggressive speak slowly and calmly e.t.c. Also work out what you want in return as compensation ask them what are they going to do to rectify the situation. Go in to complain when they are not busy so they can't fob you off.

You will have to go back in there, but go back prepared.

    Good luck.

  • tommy this is BLB, they don't give a toss. they do this shit to people day in and day out. look at wapping warrior, got his ass reamed.

  • and remind them the bad rep. they can get via you reference here or other forums - t'internet is a powerful builder of comapnies but breaker of shite ones with cusomter service that sucks like that.
Was in there myself tues night - said they had what I needed - got there, they didn't - NEVER going back. SHit service, over-priced
