Back to the OP and possibly a sensible answer - if you mean by pushing as in walking and it sounds like you've made some changes to your bike, is the chain now too tight and causing it to bind slightly?

run high ratios i.e. something 47 and above up front and 15 or below in the back. Ride up some hills, get stronger, adapt, and enjoy not spinning like a wheedwacker going down hills.
